Erie, PA - Eighth-ranked Mercyhurst College outlasted the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team, 2-1, Friday night before nearly 200 fans at the Ice Center . The first-ever meeting between the teams produced plenty of excitement with the Lakers' Stephanie Jones’ rebound goal midway through the second period proving to be the the game-winner.
Mercyhurst took a 1-0 lead late in the first period when Stefanie Bourbeau scored off a face-off deep in the Clarkson zone.
The score stayed that way until Jones’ tally at 11:50 of the second.
The Golden Knights took advantage of a Mercyhurst giveaway six minutes later when sophomore forward Lindsay Williams ( Mississauga , Ontario ) scored on a rebound of a shot by sophomore defender Andrea Maluta ( Spencerport , NY ).
Mercyhurst outshot Clarkson 34-14 for the game, including a 10-0 advantage in the third, but couldn’t shake the pesky Knights. Sophomore Kira McDonald (Pickering, ONT) made 32 saves for the Green and Gold.
Clarkson (2-1-2) and Mercyhurst (2-2) will face off tomorrow afternoon, at 4:05 p.m.
