Potsdam, NY - Although the weekend ended with the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team earning a single point against rival St. Lawrence University, the Golden Knights certainly proved they belong against the best competition in the NCAA, picking up a 1-1 tie against the sixth-ranked team in the country Sunday afternoon at Cheel Arena.
The Golden Knights moved to 4-5-4 overall and 2-3-1 in the ECACHL while the Saints are now 9-2-3 overall and 2-1-1 in the conference. Clarkson returns to action next weekend when they host Niagara University.
Both goaltenders excelled in net, as sophomore goaltender Kira McDonald (Pickering, ONT) stopped 27 shots to move to 3-5-2 on the season, while Saints goalie Jessica Moffat made 23 saves for St. Lawrence, moving to 2-1-2 on the year.
The Saints dominated the first period with a 15-4 advantage in shots, but St. Lawrence were unable to put any of their chances in the net as the period ended scoreless. Most of Clarkson's chances came late in the period.
A barrage of penalties made for spirited play in the second period with the two teams evening play. The Golden Knights broke the scoreless game at the 12:32 mark in the second period when sophomore assistant captain Ashley Shaidle (Hudson, OH) scored a power-play goal, her sixth goal of the season. Freshman Katie Morrison (Rochester, NY) sent a pass from the bottom of the right circle over to the left post where Shaidle was waiting. The assist was Morrison's fifth of the season. The two teams combined for 11 penalties in the period with the Knights being called for four infractions and the Saints being whistled for seven. The Knights also picked up their play on defense, holding the Saints to six shots in the frame while putting eight shots on goal.
In contrast to the second period, the third period saw the two teams go the entire period without a penalty. Just as it seemed the Golden Knights would end their three-game winless skid, the Saints tied the game with just 2:36 remaining. Junior Emile Berlinguette snuck a shot in between McDonald's pads and the right post for her third goal of the season. Junior Kate Michael and sophomore Elisabeth Pahler each picked up assists, their third and fifth assists, respectively. Despite the score, the Knights again handled the Saints, out shooting St. Lawrence 11-7.
After being out shot 45-18 on Saturday afternoon, the Golden Knights evened the play at home, trailing by just four shots, 28-24, in the game. St. Lawrence had nine penalties for 18 minutes while Clarkson was whistled seven times for 14 minutes. The Knights were 1-of-8 on the power play, while the Saints were 0-of-5 with the advantage
