FINLEY & KNIGHTS RECORD 5-0 SHUTOUT OF QUINNIPIAC

January 23, 2005

Potsdam, NY – Sophomore goaltender Jessica Finley (Arvada, CO), making her first start of the season, made 12 saves to record her second career shutout as the Clarkson University Women’s Hockey team beat Quinnipiac 5-0 Sunday afternoon at Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights improved to 8-9-6 overall while the Bobcats had their modest two-game unbeaten streak snapped as they fell to 4-17-2. Clarkson hosts ECACHL foes Cornell and Colgate next weekend.

Unlike Saturday afternoon’s game, the Golden Knights took little time to get on the scoreboard when sophomore Jill Nolan (Labrador, NF) forced home a shot from up close after a pass from freshman Brooke Beazer (Kingston, ONT) at the 5:58 mark. It appeared as if Quinnipiac goaltender Catharine Lapare had the puck covered up, but it slipped over the goal line to give the Golden Knights a 1-0 advantage early. The goal was Nolan’s ninth of the season.

Clarkson picked up three successive goals over a 1:08 span late in the second period to virtually assure a victory. Freshman defenseman Meghan Park (Petrolia, ONT) scored her first career goal when she took a shot from just inside the blue line at 13:22, with an assist coming from Beazer. Clarkson spent little time waiting to light the lamp again as sophomore Ashley Shaidle (Hudson, OH) picked up her seventh goal of the season when she slid a shot past Lapare from inside the right circle. Melissa Marshall (Oak Lawn, IL) and Nolan each were awarded assists. Clarkson scored again just 46 seconds later as Christine Bailkowski (Aurora, ONT) tallied her fifth goal of the campaign when she slipped a shot past Lapare that snuck over the goal line inside the right post for a 4-0 Clarkson lead. Freshman Jessica Cloutier (Parker, CO) and Marshall also picked up assists, causing a change in goaltenders for the Bobcats. Clarkson dominated play in the period, out shooting the Bobcats 15-3 in the second frame, after being out shot 6-5 in the opening period.

The game’s scoring was completed when Bailkowski scored her second goal of the game and sixth of the season at the 12:29 mark of the third period. Bailkowski was fed a pass from Cloutier right in front of the goal after a Bobcats’ defender had lost their stick. Freshman Katie Morrison (Ridgefield, CT) gained her eight assist of the season on the Knights’ fifth goal.

Catherine Lapare and Janelle Wolitski combined to make 26 saves (11 for Lapare and 15 for Wolitski) for Quinnipiac. The Knights went 0-for-2 on the power play and the Bobcats went 0-for-4 with the man-advantage. Clarkson closed with a 31-12 edge in shots.
