DEVINE SCORES FIVE POINTS IN 8-0 BLOWOUT WIN OVER UNION

October 29, 2005

Schenectady, NY - Freshman Micheleen Devine (Medicine Hat, ALB) scored two goals and assisted on three others for a career-high five points as the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team came through with its best offensive performance of the seaosn in an 8-0 win over Union College to open up the ECACHL season.

The Golden Knights improved to 4-2-1 overall and 1-0-0 in conference play while the Dutchmen dropped to 0-3-0 overall. The two teams will meet again tomorrow afternoon.

Clarkson's eight goals were its best scoring performance since February 8, 2004 when the Golden Knights put up 11 goals against Sacred Heart, a stretch of 46 games. The figure also doubled the previous high that Clarkson had scored in an ECACHL contest.

From the drop of the first puck, the Golden Knights dominated play, outshooting Union 17-3 in the first period. Junior Melissa Marshall (Oak Lawn, IL) scored what would prove to be the game-winner at the 10:32 mark in the first period with an assist coming from Jessica Cloutier (Parker, CO). Freshman Kelsey Fletcher (St. Paul, MN) scored just 2:11 later with assists going to Marshall and Devine.

The second period would prove to be just as difficult for the Dutchmen as they were out shot 12-5, but more importantly for Clarkson, the Golden Knights put the puck in the back of the net four times in those 12 shots. Devine scored an even-strength goal at 2:43, followed by a goal just under six minutes later by Christina Valesente (Ithaca, NY). Two odd-man goals came later in the period for the Knights as Cloutier scored a power-play goal at 11:01 and Devine added a short-handed maker at 17:49.

Clarkson would dominate the third period with a 20-2 shot advantage, but the Knights couldn't score until late when Amanda Dittmer (Mississauga, ONT) came through at 18:51 with an assist going to Fletcher. Junior assistant captain Ashley Shaidle (Hudson, OH) scored a power-play goal with just four seconds remaining to round out the scoring.

In addition to Devine's five-point afternoon, Marshall recorded three points on a goal and two assists while Fletcher and Cloutier each came through with a goal and an assist.

Junior netminder Kira Hurley (Pickering, ONT) recorded her third shutout of the season and second in three games with 10 saves. Alex Zirbel was busy in net for Union, making 41 saves.

The Golden Knights ended the game with a 49-10 shot advantage and went 2-for-5 on the power play while holding the Dutchmen scoreless in two man-advantage attempts.
