NAZ FLYERS DOWN KNIGHTS 4-0

September 28, 2005

Potsdam, NY - What initially looked like a tight game slowly changed to a one-sided affair as Nazareth College defeated the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team 4-0 in non-league action Wednesday afternoon at Clarkson Field.

The Golden Knights fell to 1-7-1 overall while Nazareth won its second straight game to move to 2-5-2 on the season. Clarkson continues its non-league schedule on Saturday when they host Elmira College.

Although Nazareth's scoring chances were better than the Knights' in the opening half, the two teams were scoreless through the majority of the first half before the Golden Flyers beat the clock with a goal with only 13.5 seconds remaining. Jared Millbrandt tallied his second goal of the season for Nazareth when he shot a liner to the goalie's right side that made its way into the back of the net.

The Golden Flyers put up two more goals on the scoreboard in the first 20 minutes of the second half as Matt Elliott shot a hard lofting ball over Johnathon Rushing's (Paw Paw, MI) outstretched hands from about 20 yards away for a 2-0 Nazareth lead at the 47:30 mark. Chad Kies took a similar shot with more velocity from further out to nearly the same spot at the 64:51 mark. The Golden Flyers added another goal with just 11 minutes remaining as Millbrandt scored his second goal of the game when he beat two defenders and had a one-one-one opportunity with the Clarkson goalkeeper.

Clarkson out shot Nazareth 14-13 in the game, but the Golden Flyers enjoyed an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks. Sly Majkut (Piermont, NY) made five saves in the first half for Clarkson while Rushing came on in the second half to make one save. Jeremy Bergan made eight saves for the shutout in his first appearance this season for the Golden Flyers.
