KNIGHTS WIN FIRST OVER COLGATE TO CONTINUE RISE IN ECACHL STANDINGS

January 20, 2006

Potsdam, NY – Junior Kira Hurley (Pickering, ONT) came up one shot short of her ninth shutout of the season, making 17 saves as the Clarkson University Women’s Hockey team picked up its first-ever victory over Colgate 3-1 Friday night before 312 fans at Cheel Arena.

With the victory, the Golden Knights moved to 16-7-1 overall and 8-3-0 in conference play. The Raiders dropped to 8-9-4 overall and 5-4-2 in the ECACHL. Clarkson continues its homestand tomorrow when the Golden Knights host Cornell at 4:00 pm. The win was Clarkson’s first over the Raiders since the team became a Division I team three seasons ago.

The Golden Knights got on the scoreboard first with a goal at the 10:53 mark when Clarkson picked up the puck at mid-ice with a 2-on-1 opportunity. Freshman Marie Jo Gaudet (Sherbrooke, QUE) finished off the play with her seventh goal of the season as Brooke Beazer (Kingston, ONT) assisted.

Clarkson repeated its success with another 2-on-1 goal early in the second period, this time on the power play. Junior Ashley Shaidle (Hudson, OH) scored her team-high 11th goal of the season right in front, flipping the puck over the shoulder of Colgate goaltender Elayna Hamashuk. Beazer earned her second assist of the game and Meghan Park (Petrolia, ONT) picked up her second assist of the season on the goal.

In the third period, freshman Micheleen Devine (Medicine Hat, ALB) pushed the Golden Knights advantage to 3-0 when she picked up the puck after a turnover and skated in alone to tally her 10th goal of the season early in the third frame, at the 2:47 mark. Colgate broke the shutout late in the final stanza when Kara Leene scored her fourth goal of the season, pushing the puck past the line after Hurley made an initial sprawling save on a wrap around behind the net. Becky Irvine took the first shot and was awarded the assist on the Raiders’ lone goal.

Hurley finished with 17 saves while Hamashuk closed out the contest with 20 stops for Colgate. Clarkson out shot the Raiders 23-18 for the game and held a 19-11 advantage over the final two periods after Colgate led 7-4 in on-goal opportunities in the first stanza. The Golden Knights went 1-for-3 on the power play while Colgate was 0-for-3 with the man-advantage.
