McKENNEY's CAREER GAME GUIDES KNIGHTS TO 6-0 WIN

January 7, 2006

Kimberly McKenney
Potsdam, NY – Thanks in large part to a five-point effort by freshman defenseman Kimberly McKenney (Smiths Falls, ONT), the Clarkson University Women’s Hockey team extended its winning streak to three games with a dominating 6-0 effort over Robert Morris University Saturday afternoon at Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights, ranked 10th in the country, improved to 14-6-1 overall with their third consecutive non-league win while the Colonials dropped to 1-12 on the 2005-06 campaign. Clarkson, playing the first of an eight-game homestand, returns to ECACHL action next weekend when they host Brown and Yale. Clarkson’s six goals in the game was its highest scoring output since playing against Union in late-October, a span of 13 games.

The two teams played even for the first few minutes with each squad mustering only one shot, but Clarkson began to take control of the game midway through the period with a handful of solid chances on net. Just 22 seconds into the first power-play opportunity of the game, freshman Marie-Jo Gaudet (Sherbrooke, QUE) tipped in a shot by Katie Morrison (Ridgefield, CT) from the point to put the Golden Knights up 1-0 at the 12:05 mark, her sixth goal of the season. Morrison earned her 10th assist of the year while Sophie Doyon (Victoriaville, QUE) picked up the third assist of her collegiate career.

Clarkson took little time to add another goal as Micheleen Devine (Medicine Hat, ALB) one-timed a cross-ice pass from McKenney to put the Knights up 2-0 at 13:42. The goal was Devine’s ninth of the campaign.

Senior Ashley Shaidle (Hudson, OH) kept up Clarkson’s rapid scoring pace at the start of the second period as the Knights recorded another power-play marker in the opening minutes. Shaidle tallied her ninth goal of the season off a rebound at 2:07 to give the Green and Gold a 3-0 advantage with McKenney and captain Lindsay Williams (Mississauga, ONT) picking up assists. Less than two minutes later, at 4:03, Clarkson scored their second even-strength goal of the game when Katie Morrison took a shot from the slot for her second goal of the season. McKenney earned her third assist of the game on the Knights’ fourth goal. McKenney then tallied Clarkson’s fifth goal at 11:32, another man-advantage score, with assists going to Shaidle and Williams.

McKenney continued to shine in the third period when she recorded her second power-play goal of the game, and the Knights’ fourth extra-man score, at 3:51 of the third period with a shot from just above the left circle. Her five points doubled her season output, as she had scored a goal and four assists through the first 20 games of the season. Assisting on the goal were Williams, her third assist of the contest, and Jessica Cloutier (Parker, CO).

Jessica Finley (Arvada, CO) and Stephanie Hansen (Calgary, ALB) combined on the shutout for the Golden Knights, making 13 saves. Finley made five stops in the opening 30:07 and Hansen made eight saves in the final 29:53. Brianne McLaughlin stopped 33 shots for the Colonials.

Eight different Clarkson players recorded at least one point with three players enjoying multiple-point games and the Green and Gold posted a 39-13 shot advantage. The Golden Knights went 4-for-7 on the power play while Robert Morris was held scoreless in four extra-man opportunities.
