Potsdam, NY - In her first start of the season, senior goaltender Stephanie Hansen (Calgary, ALB) made 16 saves as the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team ended a three-game winless streak with a 1-0 non-league shutout of Robert Morris University in front of 157 fans Friday afternoon at Cheel Arena.
The Golden Knights moved to 4-5-2 overall, facing a non-ranked opponent for only the fourth time in 11 games this season. Robert Morris dropped to 4-6-1 overall. The two teams will face off again at 1:00 pm on Saturday.
Over the past few games, the Golden Knights have struggled on offense and the streak continued on Friday for the first 16:47 of the opening period. Clarkson, however, broke out of a 162 minute, 4 second scoreless run with a 5-on-3 power play goal with 3:13 remaining in the period when Ashley Shaidle (Hudson, OH) found herself wide open in front of the net. Amanda Dittmer (Chatham, ONT) received a pass from Marie-Jo Gaudet (Sherbrooke, QUE) near the blue line and skated in near the top of the circle where the defense closed in on her, leaving Shaidle open close to the net.
The lone goal closed the scoring in the first period, as both teams struggled to produce many solid scoring chances. The Knights owned a 14-6 advantage in shots in the first period and extended that edge to 17-7 in the second frame. Neither team mustered much in the third stanza, with Clarkson possessing a 5-3 edge in shots.
Hansen posted her fourth career shutout with 16 saves. Her last shutout came in a 4-0 win over Vermont on January 5, 2005 when she recorded 15 saves. Friday's start was Hansen's first starting nod since December 10, 2005. The Colonials' Brianne McLaughlin made 35 saves in net.
Clarkson went 1-for-7 on the power play while Robert Morris went scoreless in six man-advantage opportunities.
