Ithaca, NY - Freshman Britney Selina (Thornhill, ONT) became the second player to record a hat trick in the past three games for the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team as the Golden Knights picked up a 5-1 victory over Cornell University Saturday afternoon at Lynah Rink.
The Golden Knights, winners of three straight and five of their last six games, moved to 8-6-2 overall and 3-4-1 in the ECACHL. Cornell dropped to 1-10-1 on the season. The Knights return home to host Yale and Brown next weekend.
Sophomore Marie-Jo Gaudet (Sherbrooke, QUE) started the scoring for the Golden Knights early in the first period when she scored her fifth goal of the season, unassisted, at 3:21. Selina then began the makings of her hat trick at 14:45 with her fourth goal of the season, with assists going to junior Amanda Dittmer (Chatham, ONT) and senior Andrea Maluta (Spencerport, NY). Clarkson's top goal scorer this season, Genevieve Lavoie (St. Laurent, QUE) continued her recent assault on opposing goaltenders with her eighth marker of the season less than a minute later, with an assist going to senior Christine Bailkowski (Aurora, ONT), to make the score 3-0 in the first period.
Cornell's Emma Chipman scored the the Big Red's lone goal at 11:26 in the second period, tallying the goal while shorthanded, but the Knights came back 25 seconds later as Selina sent in her second goal of the game, this time on the power play, with a helper coming from classmate Carlee Eusepi (Oakville, ONT). Selina finished off her first collegiate hat trick with a shorthanded, empty net goal at 14:37 of the third period.
Selina was the second freshman in three games to record a hat trick for the Knights as Lavoie turned the trick last Saturday against non-league opponent Wayne State in a 6-3 victory. Three of Clarkson's top scorers this season are freshmen (Selina, 14 points; Lavoie, 13 points; Eusepi, 9 points).
Senior Stephanie Hansen (Calgary, ALB) made 19 saves for the Knights. Beth Baronick made 13 saves through two periods for Cornell and Jenny Niewsluchowski came on to make 10 saves in the third frame. The Knights went 1-for-4 on the power play while Cornell was 0-for-5 while up a player. Clarkson out shot Cornell 28-20, owning a slight advantage in each period.
