Potsdam, NY – Sophomore Brittany Monroe made 25 saves and held the Clarkson University Women’s Hockey team scoreless in 11 power-play attempts as 6th-ranked Harvard University defeated the Golden Knights 2-0 in front of 224 fans Friday night at Cheel Arena.
The Golden Knights dropped to 3-4-2 overall and 1-3-1 in league play while Harvard remained unbeaten at 3-0, and unscored upon this season. Clarkson hosts Dartmouth at 4:00 pm on Saturday.
Harvard possessed the puck well in the first period, but was unable to convert any of its chances until late in the first period. With six minutes remaining, the Crimson got on the scoreboard first when a shot by Julie Chu bounced off the Clarkson defense out to Sarah Vaillancourt, who slid the puck past Kira Hurley (Pickering, ONT) for her eighth goal of the season in only three games. At 18:33, Harvard earned a two-goal advantage, scoring on the power play when the puck found its way from behind the net to the stick of Jenny Brine who tallied her fourth goal of the season. Vaillancourt and Chu each assisted on the goal.
The third period saw the Knights on what seemed like a perpetual power play, but Clarkson’s chances on the Harvard net were very few as the team could not score in five power-play opportunities in the final period. Clarkson out shot the Crimson 25-19 in the game, including a 17-10 advantage in the final two periods. Harvard was 1-for-8 on the power-play and the Knights were 0-for-11. Hurley finished with 17 saves in the loss for Clarkson while Martin continued her shutout streak with 25 saves, pushing her streak to 159 minutes, 47 seconds without allowing a goal in 2006.
