A hard-fought effort by the Clarkson University Women’s Hockey team against 4th-ranked Harvard came up one goal short as the Golden Knights lost to the Crimson, 4-3, in Cambridge, MA on Saturday afternoon.
After a scoreless first period, in which Clarkson out shot Harvard 6-2, The Knights took a 2-0 lead midway through the second stanza with a pair of unassisted goals seven minutes apart. Junior Katie Morrison (Ridgefield, CT) opened the scoring with her sixth goal of the season, tucking a loose puck past Harvard starting goaltender Brittany Martin from behind the cage at the 7:12 mark. Sophomore Britney Selina’s (Thornhill, ONT) followed with her 11th goal when she
gathered a loose puck behind the Harvard goal before she skated in front and snapped a quick wrist shot that beat Martin at the 14:01 mark.
Harvard pulled to within one, scoring with just 28 seconds left in the middle frame on Julie Chu’s power-play tally. The Crimson scored again just 21 seconds into the third period with Sarah Vaillancourt tying the score and then Chu put Harvard up for the first time with her second goal of the contest at 2:09.
Clarkson answered right back as freshman standout Britney Selina (Thornhill, ONT) evened the game at three-apiece with her 12th goal of the year finding the cage from the high slot at 4:31 off an assist from classmate Genevieve Lavoie (St. Laurent, QUE).
Harvard (15-4-2, 12-3-1), however, pulled out the win with the game-winning goal at 10:58 by Jenney Brine.
Senior Kira Hurley (Pickering, ONT) posted 24 saves as the Crimson out shot the Knights 28-18.
Clakrson was 0-of-5 on the power play, while Harvard connected for one goal in three man-advantage chances.
The Golden Knights (14-12-2, 6-9-1) will look to break out of a three-game losing streak when they open a four-game home stand at Cheel Arena this coming weekend, hosting Cornell and Colgate.
