Knights Fall to Harvard, Finish 7th

By gaining just one point in the final weekend of the regular season, the Clarkson University Women’s Hockey team finishes in seventh place in the ECAC Hockey standings and will return to the North Country for the opening round of the league playoffs next weekend.

The Golden Knights, who posted a 10-8-4 conference mark, will battle second-seeded St. Lawrence University in the best-of-three-game quarterfinal series at Appleton Arena in Canton, NY beginning Friday, February 27. Clarkson, which owns a 16-12-6 overall record, has advanced to the ECAC Hockey playoffs in each of its five years of eligibility.

Championship Quarterfinals Set

 

Clarkson closed out the regular season on Saturday with a 6-1 loss at league champion Harvard. On Friday, the Knights held a 4-0 lead over Dartmouth through two periods, but the eight-ranked Big Green rallied for a 4-4 tie with four third-period goals.

 

At Bright Hockey Center in Cambridge, MA on Saturday, Clarkson fell behind to the ninth-ranked Crimson 3-1 after the first period and trailed 5-1 through 40 minutes. Harvard (17-9-3, 16-4-2) added one more goal in the final stanza to earn the final five-goal victory.

 

Junior Britney Selina (Thornhill, ONT) scored the Knights’ lone goal, a power-play marker, off an assist by sophomore Melissa Waldie (Newmarket, ONT) at 6:47 of the first period to tie the score.

 

Jenny Brine and Sarah Vaillancourt led the Crimson with two goals apiece.

 

Harvard out shot Clarkson 37-24. Sophomore Lauren Dahm (Baldwinsville, NY) made 12 saves on 15 shots through 17:54 of play. Sophomore Eve Grandmont-Berube (Drummondville, QUE) came in after the Crimson’s third goal and posted 19 saves on 22 shots.

 

Clarkson went 1-of-6 on the power play, while Harvard was 2-of-8 with the man advantage.
