Clarkson Comeback Falls Short

On a night when it had a chance to gain a point on the two teams ahead of them in the ECAC Hockey standings, the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team fell to visiting Yale 3-2 in Cheel Arena on Friday night.
 
Clarkson is now 15-8-3 overall and is 9-3-2 in ECAC Hockey play while Yale is 10-11-1 overall and 7-8-0 in ECAC Hockey play.

"The difference in the game tonight was Yale taking advantage of our breakdowns and us not being able to capitalize on our chance," stated Clarkson head coach Matt Desrosiers. "On their goals we weren't able to recover quick enough from our mistakes and Yale did a good job capitalizing. I thought we had some good scoring chances tonight but weren't able to take advantage of them. Their goalie did a good job smothering rebounds not giving us many second or third opportunities. I also thought that we missed a few opportunities to create some quality scoring chances by not making the play or not being able to connect on some passes. If we can clean that part of our game up we should be able to create a lot more scoring chances for ourselves which will hopefully translate into goals. Moving forward we need to commit to doing all the little things well as those are the things that have cost us the last couple games.  We need to make sure that we have a good bounce back effort tomorrow and pick up two important league points."

Just like when the two teams played in New Haven this season, Yale would be the first team to score. At 6:55 into the first period, Jamie Haddad dug the puck out in front of the net and quickly fired it in to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 advantage they would carry into the second period.
 
Clarkson would tie it up at 5:58 in the second period when junior assistant captain Renata Fast (Burlington, ONT) threaded a pass through the Yale defense to senior Christine Lambert (Thetford Mines, QUE) who was waiting on the back post to tap it in.
 
Clarkson seemed to be building momentum, but Yale scored two goals in rapid succession to take the lead heading into the third period. First Aurora Kennedy scored at 17:28 and then at 18:42 Courtney Pensavalle added a third to the Yale tally.
 
The Golden Knights dragged a goal back when Lambert scored her second goal of the game. It came during a power play as junior assistant captain Erin Ambrose (Keswick, ONT) found sophomore Genevieve Bannon (Candiac, QUE) whose shot rebounded to Lambert who finished it. Clarkson pushed for a third and tying goal, but the Yale defense held strong and the Bulldogs were able to close out the win.
 
Clarkson held a 45-30 advantage in shots, the 45 shots representing the second-highest shot total of the season. Freshman goaltender Shea Tiley (Owen Sound, ONT) had 27 saves for the Green and Gold while her Yale counterpart had 43 stops. Clarkson was 1-3 on man-advantage opportunities while stopping both Yale power plays.
 
Clarkson has now lost two games in a row for just the second time this season and has not won in three games for the first time this season. They will look to bounce back tomorrow when Brown comes to Cheel Arena for a 3:00 pm game.
