Clarkson Skates to 6-0 Win at Union

A strong first period carried the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team to a convincing 6-0 victory over Union in Messa Rink in Schenectady, NY on Friday night.

Clarkson, ranked 4th in the nation, is now 10-0-2 overall and 1-0-2 in ECAC Hockey games while Union falls to 0-6-4 overall and 0-1-2 in conference.

"We are really happy with the way the team came out and played a full 60 minutes," said Head Coch Matt Desrosiers. "There were a few things we focused on during the week of practice that I thought we did a great job of executing on during the game. I also thought it was one of the better team games we have had all season. We mixed the lines up a bit this week to try and keep things fresh so it was great to see the team working on building some chemistry together. Hopefully we can bring that same effort and team game tomorrow against RPI."

The Golden Knights took the lead early on in the game and never looked back. Freshman Kelly Mariani scored 5:10 into the first period off a pass from junior Corie Jacobson. Less than two minutes later sophomore Amanda Titus had doubled Clarkson's lead on a power-play goal. Sophomore Brielle Bellerive and junior Genevieve Bannon picked up assists on the goal. Titus added a second goal at 16:44 in the first with freshmen Josiane Pozzebon and Loren Gabel notching assists.

In the second period, sophomore Lauren Lefler grabbed the only goal of the period. Her goal came at 12:41 with Jacobson and junior Jessica Gillham assisting.

The Green and Gold added two more goals in the final frame. First Mariani scored her second goal of the game. Senior assistant captains Olivia Howe and Erin Ambrose had the assists. The assist for Ambrose was the 111th point of her Clarkson career, tying her with former teammate Brittany Styner '14 for sixth all-time on Clarkson's scoring list. Freshman Rhyen McGill rounded out the scoring with a goal at 16:43, with Titus and Gabel nabbing the assists.

Clarkson took a season-high 56 shots against Union, and allowed the Dutchwomen to take a season-low eight shots. Clarkson scored on one of its two extra man opportunities while killing off the sole Union power-play. Clarkson sophomore goaltender Shea Tiley made eight saves for her fourth shutout of the season while Union goaltender Melissa Black made 50 stops.

Clarkson will next travel to Troy, NY to matchup against Rensselaer in a 4:00 pm game on Saturday afternoon.
