Late Power Play Score Gives Quinnipiac Second 1-0 Win Over Knights

Potsdam, NY – A power play goal in the final minutes of the third period was all the offense that either the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team and Quinnipiac could come up with on Saturday afternoon, and unfortunately for the Golden Knights it was the visitor who recorded the tally, as the Bobcats outlasted the Green and Gold 1-0 in front of 318 fans at Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights saw their five-game winning streak come to an end with the 1-0 loss, their third defeat against Quinnipiac this season, falling to 20-9-3 overall and 14-4-2 in ECAC Hockey. The Bobcats leapt back up in the conference standings at 14-4-2 as well and improved to 23-6-3 after entering the game losers in five of the last seven games.

"Tonight was a tough way to lose such a big game," said Clarkson Head Coach Matt Desrosiers. "Both teams seemed to be just waiting for that one opportunity to score the go ahead goal and unfortunately Quinnipiac took advantage on a late power play. We had a couple opportunities that we weren't able to convert on that could have made a big difference in the outcome of the game.  We are still in a great position in the league standings heading into the final weekend so we need to make sure that we focus on taking it one game at a time and finishing the regular season off with two strong games."

With two of the top defensive teams in the nation matching up, it was expected that neither team would produce much on offense, but the Knights and Bobcats took their defense to the extremes  on Saturday. Quinnipiac held a slim advantage in shots in the first period at 9-6, but it was Clarkson that had the best chance of the frame. With approximately 3:30 to go in the first period, Christine Lambert had an opportunity at the Bobcats' frame, but a solid back-check wouldn't allow her to get a good shot off. In the second period, the Bobcats had an even more lopsided run in shots at 12-5, and the best opportunities for goals came very late in the stanza. With 1:45 to go, two quick passes gave Renata Fast a chance to chip in the puck on the glove side of Quinnipiac's Sydney Rossman, but her reach wasn't quite long enough to get a piece of the puck. With time winding down in the period, Quinnipiac rifled a shot high and off the facemask of Clarkson's Shea Tiley, and fortunately for the stunned freshman the puck ricocheted harmlessly in to the corner.

At the start of the third period, Clarkson had a power play opportunity, but it was the Bobcats who nearly tallied shorthanded. Near the blue line two Clarkson players collided while trying to keep the puck in the zone and Quinnipiac ended up with a near breakaway and settled for a two-on-one. Good luck was on the side of the Knights on that play as the puck slid too far into the zone to get a good angle for a shot. Midway through the period, Fast was whistled for a body check to give Quinnipiac a power play opportunity, but the Bobcats spent more time trying to get the puck into the Clarkson zone than they did running their offense and the attempt didn't net them any shots whatsoever. A roughing penalty by the Bobcats just a minute after their power play concluded gave Clarkson a chance with an extra skater as well, but it too came up short in the shot department with the Knights getting nothing on the Quinnipiac net.

A hooking call with only 4:12 remaining took Clarkson's leading scorer, Cayley Mercer, off the ice for two minutes and gave Quinnipiac another power play, and the Bobcats took advantage of the chance this time, putting two hard shots on Tiley in the first minute, but the Clarkson goaltender was up to the task. After another save a few seconds later, the Bobcats finally ended the scoreless drought. Following the ensuing faceoff at the far circle, Morgan Frtiz-Ward worked the puck around to Erika Uden Johannsson who sent an easy pass to Cydney Roesler at the center of the blue line. The junior defender then wristed a low shot past the stick side of Tiley with only 23 seconds to go in the power play and just 2:35 on the clock.

Despite pulling Tiley for an extra attacker in the final moments, the Golden Knights were unable to come up with an equalizer. A poke check at the end of the contest kept the Bobcats from getting an empty-net tally.

Tiley finished with 27 saves and allowed the one goal, while Sydney Rossman stopped 14 shots to record her first shutout of the season and the second of her career. Rossman was making only her second start of the season and had only seen a little less than 85 minutes of action this year. Quinnipiac ended the game doubling up Clarkson in the shot department, 28-14. The Knights went 0-for-4 on the power play while the Bobcats went 1-for-4, netting the game-winner on their final opportunity.
