Clarkson Downs McGill 4-1 in Exhibition Win

Four different Golden Knights scored goals and a pair of goaltenders combined for the win as the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team opened action in 2015-16 with a 4-1 victory over McGill University in exhibition play at Cheel Arena on Saturday afternoon.

Clarkson, ranked fifth in the USCHO.com preseason poll, will begin NCAA action next weekend when it plays archrival St. Lawrence in a non-conference home-and-home series. The Knights host the Saints at Cheel Arena on Friday at 7:00 p.m. before traveling to Canton on Saturday for a 3:00 p.m. game at Appleton Arena.

"Our coaching staff is pretty happy with the effort today and I think the players were excited to get some game action in," stated Clarkson Head Coach Matt Desrosiers. "I thought we played within our system well and got some good opportunities to work on our special teams and see some line combinations. Our execution is something that we can focus on next week during practice but we liked how we were trying to make the right plays which is good to see this early in the season. There is a lot of things that we can take from this to help prepare us for our series next weekend against St. Lawrence."

Senior captain Shannon MacAulay (Mt. Herbert, PEI) led the way offensively in the Green and Gold's win with a goal and an assist. Sophomore Brielle Bellerive (North Vancouver, BC) and freshmen Emma Keenan (Calgary, ALB) and Kelly Mariani (Mississauga, ONT) also scored goals.

Sophomore Shea Tiley (Owen Sound, ONT) and junior McKenzie Johnson (Eden Prairie, MN) combined for 17 saves as Clarkson outshot the Martlets 28-18.

The Knights took a 3-1 first-period lead with Keenan, Bellerive and MacAulay scoring. After a scoreless second period Mariani closed out the win with Clarkson's fourth goal early in the final frame.
