CU Women's Basketball Preview - at Houghton (12/10)

A rough stretch for the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team could be forgotten and the 2016 portion of the schedule could end on a solid note when the Golden Knights face Houghton College on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights enter the game at 4-4 overall after three straight losses to schools from the NESCAC, including top-ranked Tufts. Host Houghton College is 5-2 on the young season and the Highlanders have won four of their last five games. The two teams have met only once before with the Highlanders claiming a 67-55 victory back in 1993-94.

Overall, Clarkson is in a bit of a shooting slump, having posted three sub-40 shooting percentages in the last week, though those came against very solid defensive teams. It also hasn't helped that in the three game stretch Clarkson has been rewarded with just 18 free throw attempts. Senior Stephanie Grobe has done led the team over the last three contests with 10.0 points per game, and she is averaging 11.4 for the season to go along with 5.1 rebounds and 1.9 steals per game. Junior guard Devin Sorell is chipping in 11.1 ppg, while Madison Shea is averaging 8.6 points, 4.4 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 3.3 steals per game. Molly Stewart leads the team with a 46.2% field goal rate, averaging 7.6 ppg.

Houghton gets plenty of second chances thanks to 15.4 offensive rebounds per game, and overall they have outrebounds opponents by nearly eight per game. Elle Reed is the team's key scorer, averaging 19.7 points per game thanks to a steady diet of 3-pointers. Reed has taken 67 3-pointers in just seven games, sinking 23 of them. While that percentage isn't tremendous, she is near flawless from the free throw line with only one miss in 28 tries in 2016. Hannah Manwaring is shooting 46.0% from the field for 10.7 points and 8.6 rebounds per game, while Leslie Moose is a tick better at 46.6%, producing 10.0 points and 8.1 rebounds per contest.
