Cayley Mercer Records 150th Career Point in 2-1 Loss

A goal with just 1:16 to play in the game was the difference as the third-ranked Clarkson University Women's Hockey team fell 2-1 to Cornell on Friday night in Cheel Arena. The loss snapped an 18-game unbeaten run for the Golden Knights.
 
Clarkson is now 17-4-4 overall and 11-1-1 in ECAC Hockey while Cornell improves to 13-5-2 overall and 9-2-2 in conference.
 
Coming into the game, Clarkson had the highest scoring offense in the conference, averaging 5.17 goals in ECAC Hockey games, but for the first two and a half periods, that offense was stifled. Luckily for Clarkson, its own defense was just as good as the Big Red's as neither team had a goal for the first 50 minutes of action.

"I thought Cornell started the game off well putting a lot of pressure on us and not giving us much time to get our feet moving and make plays," said Head Coach Matt Desrosiers. "Halfway through the first though I thought we were able to gain some momentum that we carried over into a strong second period. Their goaltender did a great job making some key saves to keep the game scoreless, allowing her team to come out hard in the third. The penalties in the third really made it difficult for us to get much going. I thought we had opportunities throughout the game to put ourselves in a position to win that we weren't able to capitalize on. Tomorrow we will need to make sure we bare down and take advantage of those situations."
 
However, with 10:09 remaining in the game, the action began to heat up. Two Clarkson penalties sandwiched around a Cornell infraction gave the Big Red a 4-on-3 advantage. Cornell took advantage as Jaime Bourbonnais was able to slip a pass to Micah Hart who was waiting on Clarkson's post for an easy tap-in.
 
Clarkson was not finished though and tied the game up at 14:54. Josiane Pozzebon (Sophomore/Bourget, ONT) started the move with a pass to co-captain Cayley Mercer (Senior/Exeter, ONT) who was able to flip it ahead to assistant captain Genevieve Bannon (Senior/Candiac, QUE). Bannon drove into Cornell's end and then centered a pass into the path of an onrushing Pozzebon who scored to tie the game. The assist was the 150th point of Mercer's career, tying her with her older sister, Carly Mercer '14 for second all-time at Clarkson.
 
Unfortunately though, with overtime looming, Cornell was able to snatch a late game-winner. After a Hanna Bunton shot was blocked, the rebound fell to Pippy Gerace who scored with just 1:16 remaining . Clarkson pulled its goaltender, hoping to tie the game once again, but the final horn blew before the Green and Gold could score.
 
Clarkson finished with a slight 30-26 advantage in shots. Clarkson was 0-4 on the power-play while Cornell finished 1-6. Shea Tiley (Owen Sound, ONT) made 24 saves for Clarkson with Marlene Boissonault had 29 stops in the victory.
 
Clarkson will try to start a new winning streak tomorrow at 3:00 pm when Colgate travels to Cheel Arena.
