Clarkson Back On Track After 6-0 Win Over 9th-Ranked Cornell

A complete effort from the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team on Saturday afternoon led to a 6-0 victory over 9th-ranked Cornell University in ECAC Hockey action before 527 fans at Cheel Arena.

Clarkson, which came back nicely from its first loss of the season in Friday's 4-3 overtime setback to 5th-ranked Colgate, improves its record to 8-1-1 overall and to 1-1-0 in the conference.

"Before the game we spoke about how good teams know how to respond after a tough loss and I thought we did that today," stated Head Coach Matt Desrosiers. "Yesterday's effort didn't sit well with the coaching staff or players so today's main focus was to bring energy and get back to playing our game. The team did a great job learning from yesterday's loss and made the adjustments and improvements we needed to defeat a good Cornell team."

The Knights' top line combined for three goals and five assists leading the Green and Gold to six goals for the second consecutive Saturday. Junior left wing Loren Gabel (Kitchener, ONT) scored twice and set up a goal; sophomore center Michaela Pejzlova (Pardubice Czech Rep) tallied a goal and an assist and freshman right wing Elizabeth Giguere (Quebec City, QUE) posted three assists. Juniors Kelly Mariani (Mississauga, ONT) and Rhyen McGill (Whitby, ONT) both recorded a goal and an assist and senior assistant captain Amanda Titus (Stittsville, ONT) scored a shorthanded marker as the Knights skated to their fourth straight win over Cornell (1-1-0, 1-1-0). Clarkson also defeated the Big Red in the ECAC Hockey Tournament Championship game and NCAA regional last year at Cheel.

Senior goaltender Shea Tiley (Owen Sound, ONT) was called upon to make just 13 saves, including two in the third period, to record her fourth shutout of the year and 28th career whitewash. Tiley is just one shutout away from tying Erica Howe's '14 all-time career mark of 29.

After a scoreless first period, it was all Green and Gold for the remaining 40 minutes.

The Knights came out flying in the middle frame, outshooting the Big Red 14-4 en route to opening up a 3-0 lead.

Clarkson struck early in the period and continued its pressure throughout the stanza to enjoy one of the best periods of the season.

Gabel started things off just 52 into the period. After Giguere forced a turnover in the Cornell end, Gabel found the puck on the goal line and fired in a sharp angle shot that surprised the Big Red goaltender.

The Knights made it 2-0 at 7:44 when Titus tallied Clarkson's first shorthanded goal of the season, knocking in a loose puck at the top of the crease off a rebound on a shot by junior assistant captain Cassidy Vinkle (Belleville, ONT). Junior defenseman Josiane Pozzebon (Bourget, ONT) also assisted.

Clarkson's top line combined for the third goal as Pejzlova finished off a pass across the crease from Giguere at 14:43. Gabel also assisted.

Clarkson did not let up in the final stanza, adding three more goals.

McGill recorded her second goal of the year, tipping in a shot from the point by sophomore defenseman Ella Shelton (Ingersol, ONT) at 2:15. Mariani, who also assisted on Clarkson's fourth goal, made it 5-0 at 9:17 with a blast from the right circle for her third goal of the season. McGill and Pozzebon assisted.

Gabel closed out the rout with her fourth goal of the weekend and team-high ninth of the year at 13:34 with Pejzlova and Giguere assisting.

Clarkson went 1-of-4 on the power play and killed off all six of Cornell's man-advantage opportunities.

Ranked second in the national polls, the Knights take to the road next weekend playing at Yale and Brown.
