Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Clarkson Shuts Out Bemidji State 2-0 in Home Opener

New and old came together for the defending National Champions' home-opening win as the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team defeated Bemidji State 2-0 on Friday afternoon at Cheel Arena.

Freshmen Avery Mitchell (Pickering, ONT) and Elizabeth Giguere (Quebec City, QUE) supplied the goals and senior Shea Tiley (Owen Sound, ONT) posted 15 saves.

Clarkson, ranked second in the country, improves its record to 2-0-1 and has not lost in its last 19 games, dating back to January 20.

"Overall, tonight was a pretty fast paced and exciting game," said Head Coach Matt Desrosiers. "I thought Bemidji got out to a good start and put some pressure on us early in the first, but we were able to settle things down in the second half of the period and apply some pressure of our own. Bemidji played strong defensively and really made us work for our chances. It wasn't until the third period where we were able to capitalize on a couple nice opportunities to secure the win. Tomorrow should be another very entertaining game from two good teams."

The Knights dominated in the non-league contest, outshooting the Beavers 32-15, but had to wait until the third period before their efforts paid off.

After a scoreless 40 minutes, Mitchell scored the first goal of the season against Bemidji State (1-1-1) just 2:33 into the final frame. The rookie defender took a pass from senior Amanda Titus (Stittsville, ONT) at the top of the left circle and fired in a blast through a screen for her first collegiate goal. Freshman Michaela Boyle (Reading, MA) also assisted.

Clarkson added an insurance goal midway through the period when Giguere gathered in a centering pass from sophomore Michaela Pejzlova (Pardubice, Czech Rep.) and sent a shot from the slot just under the crossbar at 11:54 for her second goal of the season. Junior defenseman Josiane Pozzebon (Bourget, ONT) started the play with a soft pass off the left boards to Pejzlova.

Tiley, who has allowed just two goals through the first three games, posted 14 saves over the final 40 minutes to record her 25th career shutout.

The Knights went 0-of-3 on the power play, while the Beavers were 0-of-2 with the man-advantage.

Clarkson and Bemidji State will meet up again on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
