Knights Fall at Second-Ranked Cortland, 17-5

Cortland, NY – Senior Kate Dillon and sophomore Jaid Baytos each scored a pair of goals for the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team but second-ranked Cortland State had too much firepower for the Golden Knights to overcome as the Red Dragons claimed a 17-5 victory on Sunday afternoon.

The Golden Knights saw their record evened at 1-1, while Cortland began its 2017 season with a win. Clarkson will take on its third SUNYAC foe in less than a week when the team travels to face Oswego State on Tuesday.

Cortland took little time asserting itself on offense, scoring twice in the first four minutes, but the Golden Knights were able to halt that momentum and pull within one when Dillon scored at the 16:24 mark of the first half. Down by just one through the first 16 minutes, Clarkson was playing virtually even with the Red Dragons, but Cortland rattled off four straight goals to end the half and then tallied five more to start the second to push its advantage to 11-1 midway through the second half. Baytos ended the nine-goal run by the Red Dragons, scoring a free-position shot at the 18:00 mark of the second. Cortland responded with another goal to make it 12-2, but the Knights picked up three of the next four scores to make things interesting at 13-5. The Red Dragons put an end to any hope of a miracle comeback by Clarkson, scoring four times in the final five minutes for the 17-5 win.

Cortland held advantages in shots (26-14), shots on goal (21-9), and groundballs (17-10) while the two teams were even on draw controls (12-12).

Dillon and Baytos each scored twice while Emma Andrews tallied late in the second half for Clarkson. Taylor Collins earned four draws and picked up two groundballs. Samantha Gladd made four saves for the Knights.

Kristen Ohberg scored four times on five shots for Cortland while Lexie Meager and Megan Gonzalez each scored three goals. Hannah Elmer also added four points on two goals and two assists. Jaclyn Beshlian made four saves in 55 minutes, 22 seconds before being relieved for the final four-plus minutes.
