Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Clarkson Gains 5-3 Win in Exhibition Play vs Guelph

With a 5-3 win over Guelph University in exhibition play at Cheel Arena on Saturday, the 2017-18 Clarkson University Women's Hockey team has already done one better than last year's championship squad, which lost in its first action of the season.

Defending National Champion, Clarkson officially opens the season next weekend with a pair of games at Northeastern University.

Freshman Tia Stoddard (La Mesa, CA) led the Golden Knights offensively against Guelph with two goals.

Clarkson controlled play throughout the game outshooting the Gryphons 51-11.

Junior Loran Gabel (Kitchener, ONT) tallied one goal and one assist, while senior Katelyn Fournier (Ottawa, ONT) and junior Cassidy Vinkle (Belleville, ONT) both scored once. Senior captain Savannah Harmon (Downers Grove, IL) earned three assists.

Despite out shooting Guelph 17-3 through the opening 20 minutes, Clarkson found itself trailing when the Gryphons scored the game's first goal with just one second remaining in the first period.
The Knights continued to dominate in the middle frame and took the lead with a four-goal outburst as Vinkle, Stoddard, Gabel and Fournier all found the back of the net.

Guelph closed the gap mid-way through the final frame with a goal by Kelly Gibbons, just 34 seconds in, and a power-play marker by Karli Shell at 10:48.

Stoddard close out a fine effort by the Green and Gold with her second tally.

The Knights used all three goaltenders with freshman Kia Castonguay picking up the win by turning aside all four shots she faced in the second period. Senior Shea Tiley started in goal and made two first-period stops. Sophomore Jenna Brenneman posted two saves in the final stanza.

Clarkson was 1-of-5 on the power play and killed off five of Guelph's six man-advantage opportunities.
