Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Gabel Sets Goal Record in 4-0 Win Over St. Lawrence

On a special day for Clarkson University Women's Hockey before a record-setting crowd of 2,766 at Cheel Arena, one of the Golden Knights' all-time greats enjoyed a record-setting game in the Green and Gold's 4-0 victory over archrival St. Lawrence on Saturday afternoon.

Senior Loren Gabel (Kitchener, ONT) rewrote a chapter of the Clarkson record book as she became the all-time leading goal scorer in the program's 16-year history. On Clarkson's 2018 National Championship Banner raising day, Gabel opened the scoring against St. Lawrence with her 81st career goal to break the previous mark held by Cayley Mercer '17.

Gabel picked up a short pass from graduate transfer T.T. Cianfarano (Oswego, NY) just outside the Saints' blueline and skated to the bottom of the left circle were she fired in a quick wrist shot for a power-play goal with just 8.2 seconds remaining in the period. Sophomore Elizabeth Giguere (Quebec City, QUE) started the play with strong work along the boards.

Gabel, who also tallied two assists in the win, ranks third on the Green and Gold's all-time scoring list with 154 points, including 73 assists through 128 career games. Gabel, who has five goals and five assists through six games this season, trails only Cayley Mercer (178 points) and Jamie Lee Rattray '14 (181) on the Knights' points list.

Freshman Morgan Helgeson (Lake Elmo, MN) made it 2-0 late in the middle frame, sweeping in a loose puck at the top of the crease for her second goal of the weekend and third of her career. Sophomore Tia Stoddard (La Mesa, CA) and junior defenseman Ella Shelton (Ingersoll, ONT) assisted.

After a scoreless second period, Clarkson added two more goals over the final 20 minutes to complete its seventh victory over the Saints in the past eight meetings.

Giguere tallied twice in an 18-second span to close out the win. She scored into an empty net at 15:14 and followed with her team-high sixth goal of the year at 15:32.

Graduate transfer Kassidy Sauve (Whitby, ONT) was impressive in goal as she made 22 saves, including 13 in the third period, to record her first shutout as a Golden Knight. She posted 22 career shutouts at Ohio State.

Clarkson out shot St. Lawrence 29-22.

The Knights were 1-of-6 on the power play and killed off all three of St. Lawrence's man-advantages.

"We can definitely take a lot from this weekend's series with St Lawrence," stated Head Coach Matt Desrosiers.  "They are always a tough team to play against and force you to have to be at the top of your game if you want a chance at winning.  I thought we started the game today with some great energy that we were able to carry over from the banner raising ceremony.  We were able to make a few adjustments from Friday night's game that really made a positive impact in Saturday's game.  There are still a few areas we can sharpen up, but I thought we took a few good steps forward this weekend.  We now just need to make sure we build on those positives this week during practice heading into next weekend's games against Syracuse."

Standing at 5-1 overall, the two-time defending National Champions, play a home-and-home series vs Syracuse this coming weekend.
