Clarkson Completes Season-Opening Weekend Sweep at Bemidji State

The Clarkson University Women's Hockey team jumped out to a 4-0 lead midway through the second period and then held off Bemidji State down the stretch to earn a 5-3 victory, completing the season-opening, non-league sweep at Sanford Center. The Golden Knights skated past the Beavers 5-1 on Friday.

"I'm glad we got out of there with two wins, but we definitely didn't have our best this weekend," stated Head Coach Matt Desrosiers. "A lot of that was due to the effort Bemidji brought both games though. They are a really hard working team that is tough to play against and had us on our heals at points throughout the weekend. We were able to get some big saves and timely goals over the two games, which really helped. It was a good couple games to get under our belt though to see what areas we did well in and what we need to improve upon moving forward. We are going to need to have a good week of practice to make sure we are ready for a good Robert Morris team next weekend. "

Five different Golden Knights score in Saturday's victory giving Clarkson eight different goal scorers on the weekend.

The Green and Gold tallied twice in the final two minutes of the first period to get their high-powered offense rolling. Senior forward Kelly Mariani (Mississauga, ONT) connected at 18:30 and sophomore right wing Elizabeth Giguere (Quebec City, QU) scored at 19:01.

Senior assistant captain, defenseman Josiane Pozzebon (Bourget, ONT) wasted little time in starting the second period, scoring just 63 seconds into the stanza, finishing off a pass from junior center Michaela Pejzlova (Pardubice, Czech Republic).

The Knights built their lead to 4-0 at 8:55 of the middle frame with senior Loren Gabel (Kitchener, ONT) picking up her 77th career goal with junior defenseman Ella Shelton (Ingersoll, ONT) and Giguere setting up the play.

The Beavers, who held a 34-20 shot advantage, rallied back with three unanswered goals to cut Clarkson's lead to 4-3 with under 10 minutes to play. Lydia Passolt started the Bemidji roll at 16:57 of the second period, followed by goals from Kiki Radke and Emily Bergland at 4:48 and 12:11 of the final frame.

ECAC Hockey Player of the Year in 2016, grad student T.T. Cianfarano (Oswego, NY) scored her first goal for the Green and Gold with 55 seconds remaining to seal the victory.

Kassidy Sauvé (Whitby, ONT) the other standout transfer graduate student on the Clarkson roster posted 32 saves, including 16 in the opening 20 minutes.

Two-time defending National Champion, Clarkson opens up the home portion of the schedule next weekend with a two-game, non-league series vs. Robert Morris at Cheel Arena.
