Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | January 25, 2019

Hot Start by Bard Sends Clarkson to 73-49 Defeat

Annandale-on-Hudson, NY – For everything that went right for Bard College in the first half Friday night, nearly everything went wrong for the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team as the Golden Knights suffered a 73-49 Liberty League loss to the Raptors.

The Golden Knights dropped to 3-13 overall and 2-7 in conference games while the Raptors pushed their mark to 10-7 overall and 6-4 in league games. Clarkson will look to regroup on Saturday when it takes on Vassar College.

The first few minutes made it appear as if the game would be tightly contested like the first matchup between the two teams, with Clarkson holding a small 4-3 advantage after a layup from Matt Higgins at 18:41. However, the Knights ended up on the short side of a 20-0 run, missing 11 straight shots with four turnovers while Bard made 10 straight shots with only a handful of turnovers keeping the Raptors in check. Bard led 28-5 before it finally missed, but the Raptors offense continued to churn, increasing their lead to 30 (44-14) on a Zack Jacobs 3-pointer with 2:52 to go. Clarkson cut into the margin slightly, but still found itself trailing by 29 at the break.

Bard shot 20-for-30 (66.7%) in the first half with eight 3-point field goals, while the Knights were just 7-for-27 from the field with a single 3-pointer. Jacobs was a big part of Bard's strong run, going 4-for-5 from beyond the 3-point line in 11 minutes off the bench.

The Raptors scored the first six points of the second half to increase their lead to 35 before Jake Purdy hit a shot at 16:51. That make started a 21-6 run by Clarkson, capped off by a Roburt Welch 3-pointer at 11:40, pulling the Knights to within 20 (61-41). However, that streak was all that the Knights had in them as Clarkson went cold, going six minutes with nothing more than a single free throw as Bard edged back out to a 29-point advantage. Although the Raptors' last basket came with close to five minutes remaining, the Knights scored just five points down the stretch and finished behind by a 24-point margin.

Ten different players scored for the Knights, led by Welch's eight points on 3-for-6 shooting. Alijah Rue recorded 15 points, 5 assists, 2 blocks and 3 steals while David Runcie chipped in 13 points. Armando Dunn also added 10 points and seven rebounds and Jacobs finished with 12 points. Besides a gap in shooting percentages, the two teams tied in rebounds (35-35) and were separated by just one turnover (17 for Clarkson, 16 for Bard).
