Troy, NY – For the first 60-plus minutes, the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team controlled play against Hobart College, but the Statesmen picked up two goals in the final 30 minutes to take a 2-1 victory over the Golden Knights in the Liberty League Championship game Sunday afternoon.

The Golden Knights saw their season mark fall to 11-5-4 while Hobart moved to 14-4-2. The Statesmen advance to the NCAA Division III Tournament, while Clarkson will hope that its season can be extended by an at-large bid after its solid tournament run that saw it advance past the third (Ithaca) and first (Rensselaer) ranked teams in the New York Region.

A day after struggling on offense against 12th-ranked Rensselaer, Clarkson put pressure on Hobart immediately and nearly converted in the opening moments. A quick cross to freshman Michael Lanfear resulted in a hard shot off the post at the 1:39 mark and a shot from John Furcick a few minutes later was wide. Hobart's lone shot on goal in the first half was a chance from 35 yards out, but the one-hopper went into Ian Roeloffs arms at 6:18. Although it didn't count as a shot on goal, the Statesmen's best chance of the half came less than two minutes later on a free kick, as the cross found the head of August Martini, with his attempt hitting the post and Roeloffs quickly covering up to make sure there would be no rebound opportunity.

Clarkson continued to put on the pressure at the midway point of the half as Cam Emde-Gerdine's hard shot from about 20 yards out was tipped up and over the crossbar by Hobart goalkeeper Brian Salazar at 25:13, but the Knights would convert exactly two minutes later. Emde-Gerdine was clipped and taken down from behind around 25 yards out from the goal, giving the Knights a direct kick opportunity. With two players screening in front and one feigning a shot, sophomore Bobby Guilfoil ripped a curling shot with his left foot into the top corner over a leaping Salazar to give Clarkson a 1-0 lead at 27:13.

The rest of the half was mostly quiet after the goal, but the Statesmen nearly tied the game in the last minute of the contest. A seemingly harmless pass in front saw Jack Bizub taking on three Clarkson defenders. An attempt at a clear failed for the Knights and Bizub was going in all alone against Knights' keeper Ian Roeloffs. Bizub and Roeloffs met at nearly the same time around 12 yards out from the goal, with Roeloffs ticking the ball off Bizub and the ball rolling out of bounds. Bizub went down looking for a call with the referees trailing far off the play, but no whistle was blown and Clarkson received the goal kick with Bizub running back to join the midfield.

Clarkson finished the half with a 7-5 lead in shots and a 4-1 edge in shots on goal. The Knights also recorded four corner kicks in the first half while Hobart failed to register a chance from its corners.

Not willing to sit back and hope that their single goal would hold up for the next 45 minutes, the Golden Knights came out with pressure to start the second half and nearly added to their goal total. Senior exchange student Sebastian Dietachmair ripped a shot from the right side line and his attempt was denied by Salazar, but the Hobart keeper could not corral the rebound. Salazar and Hobart lucked out, however, as Stephen Klimek's ensuing shot went wide.

Hobart knotted things up near the midway point of the second half on a play that developed slowly. Nick Wigglesworth settled the ball some 70 yards away from the Clarkson goal, carried the ball up about 10 yards and sent a long pass to the top of the box. There he found Nick Patrick against two Clarkson defenders, but Patrick took little time, taking one step in and taking a shot on a ball near his hip, hitting the ball high over Roeloffs into the top corner at 63:54.

The goal seemed to ignite Hobart's effort on offense as the Statesmen put plenty of pressure on Clarkson's defense. Many of those chances went high or wide, but eventually the Knights' luck ran out. With a little under 14 minutes to go, Pete Critchlow sent a long ball off a corner to the opposite post where several Clarkson defenders and Hobart forwards crowded, and the ball ricocheted off the head of a Golden Knight for an own goal, giving the Statesmen a 2-1 lead at 76:13.

Clarkson's best chance down the stretch came in the final three minutes as the Knights picked up a corner kick chance, but the lone attempt was blocked. A minute later the Green and Gold had another corner but the play was cleared by the Statesmen.

Hobart finished with a 13-12 lead in shots, but trailed in shots on goal 6-3. The two teams finished tied in corners at 6-6. Roeloffs finished with two saves and Salazar ended with five stops.
