Knights Host Central NY Rivals in Key ECAC Hockey Weekend at Cheel

11/6/2019 1:09:00 PM

Unbeaten in its last six games and winners of three straight, Clarkson University hosts a key weekend of ECAC Hockey play to open the home portion of the league campaign. The Golden Knights face off against Central NY rivals Colgate and Cornell at Cheel Arena, playing the Raiders at 6:00 p.m. on Friday followed by a Top-10 showdown against the third-ranked Big Red on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.

Both games can be viewed live streamed on ESPN+ (US) and StretchInternet (international).

Guided by 12th-year Head Coach Matt Desrosiers and assistants Britni Smith and Tony Maci, Clarkson is ranked 5/6th in the national polls with a 7-1-2 overall record. The Green and Gold are 2-0 in ECAC Hockey play after having swept in the Capital District last weekend, shutting out Union 4-0 and edging Rensselaer 5-4.

Led by senior Captain Ella Shelton and Assistant Captains, senior Taylor Turnquist and junior Meaghan Hector, the Knights host Mercyhurst in a two-game series next weekend in Potsdam to close out a four-game home stand.

• Clarkson's offense is once again ranked among the most productive in the nation, averaging 3.90 goals per game, 8th in the country.  The Knights have scored four-or-more goals in seven of their first 10 games and have outscored their opponents 16-4 during the current three-game winning streak.
• Defensively, the Green and Gold are ranked 16th in the NCAA, allowing 2.10 goals per game. Clarkson posted its second consecutive shutout with last Friday's 4-0 win at Union, before RPI scored twice in the opening three minutes in Saturday's come-from behind 5-4 win.
• The Knights are 2-0-1 at home, outscoring the opponents 13-2.
• On the road, Clarkson is 5-1-1 with a 26-19 edge in goals.
• A two-time All-American and a 2019 Top 10 Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award Finalist, junor Elizabeth Giguere shares the Clarkson scoring lead with freshman Gabrielle David. Teammates with the Limoilou Titans three years ago, the linemates have put up 18 points apiece through 10 games, tied for seventh in the country.
• A right wing, Giguere has scored eight goals to go along with 10 assists. She has a current five-game point streak. Giguere ranks fourth on the Knights' all-time scoring list with 162 points and 61 goals and 101 assists through 91 games.
• A two-time ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Week selection, David has tallied six goals and 12 assists. She also has a current five-game point streak and is coming off a two-goal, one assist-effort in the win at RPI.

• Sophomore Marie-Pier Coulombe posted her third career shutout behind 14 saves in Friday's win at Union.  She posts a .924 save percentage and a 1.47 GAA

Series Colgate:  Clarkson leads the 37-game all-time series over Colgate 22-11-4. In recent years, the Golden Knights and Raiders have become very familiar with one another, facing off seven times in the last two seasons with Clarkson holding a 4-3-0 edge in that span. Colgate has enjoyed some success against the Golden Knights recently, but Clarkson has dominated on the biggest of stages, winning four playoff games. The Raiders and Knights have played in three playoff games the last two seasons, with Clarkson owning a 3-0 record in those contests. Most notably, an Elizabeth Giguere overtime goal won Clarkson the 2018 National Championship over Colgate. Last season the Raiders would exact a measure of revenge in the regular season defeating Clarkson 4-1 at home and 4-3 at Cheel Arena, but the Knights won when it counted, shutting out Colgate 2-0 in the ECAC semifinals in Lynah Rink to advance. Clarkson is 9-6-2 against the Raiders at Cheel Arena, but have not beat them at home since the ECAC Final during the 2017-18 season, a 3-0 shutout win. Elizabeth Giguere possesses a flair for the dramatic and has saved some of her best work for Colgate. In seven games, Giguere has scored four goals and tallied eight assists to lead the Golden Knights attack. Michaela Pejzlova has put up a respectable six points on three goals and three assists against the Raiders.

Series Cornell:  Clarkson owns a 22-14-4 advantage over Cornell in the all-time series and has won seven of the last eight matchups. The Golden Knights are 13-9-3 over the Big Red since the start of the decade and Clarkson is 14-6-2 all-time versus the Big Red at Cheel Arena, not losing to Cornell in Potsdam since the 2016-17 season. Cornell took the first regular season matchup last season, defeating Clarkson 3-1 in Ithaca. It was a different game when the Big Red came to the not-so-friendly confines of Cheel Arena, as Clarkson tallied four goals in the first period to claim a 4-0 victory. The two squads would meet once in the ECAC Championship game, with the Knights picking up the conference title thanks to a 4-1 victory. Ella Shelton had a goal and an assist in the championship game, while Elizabeth Giguere assisted on a pair of Loren Gabel tallies. Rhyen McGill, who missed all three matchups a season ago, nevertheless has a team-best five goals against the Big Red in her career. Michaela Pejzlova (2-7-9), Shelton (2-6-8), and Giguere (0-9-9) each have put up at least eight points against Cornell.

Scouting Colgate: Colgate has been great at home so far this year going 4-1-1 in six games but has faltered on the road with a 1-2-0 road mark. Overall, the Raiders are 6-4-1 with a 1-1-0 record in ECAC play. After a pair of home games to start the season, Colgate went on the road to face second-ranked Minnesota, and while the Raiders kept the first game close, losing 2-0 to the Gophers, they got tagged for eight goals in the second contest in an 8-1 loss. Colgate opened up the league portion of their schedule this past weekend at Class of 1965 Arena, losing 1-0 to fifth-ranked Princeton and winning 4-2 over Quinnipiac. After graduating the two leading scorers from a year ago, the Raiders offense is led by a pair of young forwards in freshman Danielle Serdachny and sophomore Noemi Neubauerova, who each have a team-high four goals and five assists for nine points apiece. The Colgate offense has taken a step back this year, averaging 2.82 goals per game to rank 18th in the nation. This is a significant drop from last season when the team averaged 3.50 goals per game and ranked sixth nationally. The Raiders also graduated one of the best goalies in program history last year in Julia Vandyk. Junior Liz Auby has stepped in and been very good for Colgate thus far, posting a .931 save percentage and 1.75 goals against average in 10 games.

Scouting Cornell: Cornell started the season ranked fifth in the USCHO.com poll, but has jumped up to third following its first two games of the season. Because of Ivy League guidelines, the team did not open up their campaign until October 25th, but posted back-to-back shutout wins over eighth-ranked Robert Morris (6-0, 3-0). Cornell began ECAC play this past weekend against Quinnipiac and sixth-ranked Princeton, beating the Bobcats 1-0 and then scoring three second-period goals to down the Tigers 3-1. Cornell has one of the best defensemen in the country in Jaime Bourbannais. The senior is in line to play her 100th career game this weekend, and leads the team with seven points on one goal and six assists. This comes as no surprise after Bourbannais put up nine goals and 20 assists last year for 29 points, the fourth-best figure on the team. Cornell returns its top four scorers from a season ago, bringing back Maddie Mills (39 points) and Kristin O'Neill (38 points), who was also the team's leader in goals (22). Although the Big Red are returning their top-tier players, Cornell has gotten some great production out of second-year forward Gillis Frechette in her first four games. Frechette was middle of the pack last year with 13 points, but has put up six points (3-3-6) already this season. In net, Lindsay Browning has taken over starting goalie duties and has posted a miniscule 0.25 goals against average with a .986 save percentage in four games. Browning is a big reason Cornell has the lowest goals against average in the nation at 0.25, a whole 0.75 goals per game better than Northeastern which sits in second place. Cornell is the only team to not give up a goal on their penalty kill this season, going a perfect 15-for-15 in four games.
