Martin Scores Game-Winner on Bent Shot in Knights 3-2 Victory

Potsdam, NY – Senior Danielle Martin bent a shot in from just outside the penalty box with a little less than 13 minutes to go to lift the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team to a 3-2 victory over Johnson & Wales Friday afternoon at Hantz Turf Field.

The Golden Knights open the 2019 season at 1-0, the 11th straight year that the Green and Gold have started their campaign on a winning note. Clarkson will take on Brockport at 2:30 pm on Saturday.

Clarkson produced several scoring opportunities in the early going but Wildcats' goalkeeper Colleen Lynch stuffed several shots in close in the first 10 minutes. It was Johnson & Wales that would get on the scoreboard first just after the early Clarkson attempts. On a quick counter, Jordan Restivo found Jordan Petrucci in the middle of the field in the Knights' defensive end, and Petrucci lofted a hard shot from about 22 yards out over Clarkson's Elyse Green to put the Wildcats up 1-0 at the 12:20 mark.

Clarkson responded just over five minutes later as Camryn Careccia and Giulia Mahoney played a little give-and-go. It was Mahoney that took the ball in deep to the Wildcats' zone and then passed the ball back out to Careccia just a few strides inside the penalty box, where Careccia hit a low shot to the right corner just inside the post to tie the game at 1-1 in the 18th minute.

The Knights took the lead early in the second half as neither team could gain control of a ball that was squibbing around in the box. Danielle Martin and Colleen Lynch each tried to pick up possession, and Martin was turned around but able to hit the ball with her left foot while off balance to put the Green and Gold up 2-1 at 53:21.

Johnson & Wales increased its pressure on Clarkson over the next 20 minutes and had some chances, including an opportunity that saw one ball hit the post and another shot get blocked in the span of less than five seconds. The continued presence in the Knights' defensive zone eventually saw the Wildcats tie the game. A cross in the midfield from Catherine Nolan found Restivo, and the sophomore forward did the rest, using a low chip shot to squeak the ball past Green at 75:12. The Wildcats rejoicing was brief, however, as Clarkson took the lead back less than two minutes later. Martin was taken down to the left of the goal, just outside the penalty box and was awarded a free kick. Her shot appeared to be more of a cross, but the ball had enough curve to it to bend back in and hit the inside of the far post, ricocheting to stay inside the goal at 77:11.

The Wildcats finished with a 23-12 edge in shots (11-7 shots on goal) and a modest 7-4 advantage in corner kicks. Green made nine saves to pick up the win for Clarkson, while Lynch stopped four shots for the Wildcats.
