Knights Complete Season-Opening Sweep of Syracuse with 5-1 Win at Cheel

Senior transfer Kayla Friesen (Winnipeg, MB) came up big once again in her opening weekend as a Golden Knight scoring two more goals and assisting on another to help lift the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team to a 5-1 victory over Syracuse University before 648 fans in its home opener at Cheel Arena on Saturday afternoon.

The third-ranked Golden Knights, who knocked off the Orange 4-3 in Central NY on Friday night, will take their 2-0 record on the road for the next four games, traveling out to the Midwest for the two-game series at Minnesota Duluth this coming weekend.

A three-year standout at St. Cloud State, Friesen has made a big impression at Clarkson, tallying four goals and five points in her first two games for the Green and Gold.

The nation's leading scorer from last year, junior Elizabeth Giguere (Quebec City, QUE) also had the hot hand in the weekend sweep of Syracuse, collecting a goal and an assist in both games.

Giguere opened the scoring in Saturday's contest, slipping in a low shot, short side from the top of the crease at 15:04 of the first period for her 55th career goal. Freshman defenseman Stephanie Markowski (Edmonton, ALB) and senior Michaela Pejzlova (Pardubice, Czech Republic) assisted.

Pejzlova made it 2-0 at 17:49, knocking in a perfect centering pass from Friesen for her 57th career goal. Freshman Gabrielle David (Drummondville, QUE) also assisted.

A pair of power-play goals in the middle frame gave the Knights a 4-0 lead through 40 minutes.

Senior Taylor Turnquist (Blaine, MN), playing up front due to injuries to Clarkson forwards, finished off a beautiful passing combination from Pejzlova, with her second assist of the game, and Giguere at 5:40. Friesen netted her first of the night on a rising wrist shot from the left circle with 1:27 remaining in the period. Blueline partners, freshman Lauren Bernard (Madison, OH) and junior Meaghan Hector (Georgetown, ONT) assisted.

At 3:55 of the third, Syracuse's Anna Leschyshyn spoiled the shutout bid by Clarkson junior transfer Amanda Zeglen (Calgary, ALB), knocking in a rebound in front while on the man-advantage.

Friesen closed out the weekend scoring at 17:53, sneaking a shot through the five-hole of Orange goaltender Allison Small.  David, with her fourth assist of the weekend, and junior defenseman Avery Mitchell (Pickering, ONT) set up the goal.

Clarkson held a 29-24 shot advantage. The Knights were 2-of-5 on the power play and killed off five of Syracuse's six man-advantage attempts.

Zeglen, a transfer from Ohio State, stopped 23 of 24 shots in her Clarkson debut.
