Phelps Scores Career-High in Win Over Villa Maria

Potsdam, NY – Senior Jason Phelps recorded a career-high 26 points, shooting 9-for-12 from the floor with seven 3-pointers, to help the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team to a 101-80 win over Villa Maria College on Wednesday afternoon.

The Golden Knights improved to 1-1 on the season and will be back in action on Saturday afternoon when they face Bryant & Stratton (Buffalo). The 101 points that Clarkson scored were the most since the finale of the 2017-18 season.

Following a slow start to open the Wednesday's contest, the Golden Knights rained down several 3-pointers in the first half to quickly build a double-digit lead. Clarkson received scoring contributions from several sources as five different players hit shots from beyond the 3-point arc. Overall, the Knights shot better than 50 percent from the floor in the first half, going 20-for-36 from the field with eight 3-pointers. Villa Maria cut into the margin near the end of the opening half by employing a press, but the Knights finished the half up by 13 thanks to layup by Jason Phelps in the waning seconds.

Clarkson opened the second half with a 13-2 run which included three more 3-pointers in just over two minutes to rebuild the lead to 24. By getting to the basket, the Vikings were able to cut the margin to as few as 14 in the coming minutes, but the Knights stayed comfortably ahead in double digits for the remainder of the contest. With a little over a minute remaining in the contest, Malachi Harris hit a 3-pointer from the wing to put Clarkson over the century mark, the third time that the Green and Gold have eclipsed 100 points since the start of the 2012-13 season.

Senior guard Jason Phelps finished with a career-high 26 points, including seven 3-pointers. Reese Swedberg notched a double-double while Chris Hulbert and Blake Gearhart also finished in double figure. Clarkson finished 37-for-73 from the floor with 16 3-pointers. More impressively, the team had 30 assists on its 37 baskets.

Juwan Beale scored 21 points in 24 minutes and Master Radford nearly recorded a double-double with 10 points and nine boards. Trent Cordone, Kevin Goode, Jr., and Jeriah Williams each contributed 12 points.
