Knights Come Up Goal Short in 3-2 Loss Against Plattsburgh

Potsdam, NY – Opening the season with a high-energy contest that was back-and-forth throughout, the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team came up on the short end of a 3-2 decision against North Country rival Plattsburgh State on Wednesday at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights, 0-1-0, will continue an early run versus SUNYAC opponents this weekend when they take on SUNY Geneseo and Buffalo State in the North Country Classic.

Plattsburgh controlled play in the early going as the pace was frenetic in the opening minutes. That style helped the Cardinals strike first in the 13th minute when a combination of passes found the foot of Yusif Okine around eight yards out, where the senior finished with a quick chip shot into the upper right corner. The goal woke up the Knights and they quickly struck back with a solid run at the other end. James Nicholas crossed a ball in front to Nolan Grady, who one-timed a pass on the doorstep of the goal to Ben Root, where Root connected within a cluster of bodies near the goal line at 16:27.

Each team exchanged momentum in the next 15 minutes, and the Cardinals broke through in the 34th minute. Plattsburgh enjoyed three straight corner kick chances in a one minute stretch and scored when the Knights failed to clear the ball. Brian Coughlan ended up with a small set piece from about 20 yards out and delivered a hard shot into the net at 33:36.

The score remained 2-1 in Plattsburgh's favor until early in the second half. A foul just outside the penalty area gave Clarkson a solid opportunity, and graduate student delivered a hard shot into the upper corner at 59:10 off a direct kick to knot the game at 2-2.

Both squads had their chances in the next 25 minutes with some close calls, but it was Plattsburgh that would score what would prove to be the game winner. Coughlan found Jai Coker on the right side of the net and he snuck a hard grounder to the opposite side of the frame in the 88th minute to avoid overtime.

Plattsburgh finished with a small advantage in shots (12-11) and held a 6-0 advantage in corners, though three came on one possession. Bryan Benitez made four saves for the Knights while Teddy Healy denied five shots for the Cardinals.
