Knights Split on Second Day in Virginia

Newport News, VA - Sophomore Sara Galante recorded 12 kills in back-to-back matches as the Clarkson Univeristy Volleyball team split on Saturday afternoon, beating Illinois Wesleyan in four sets (25-22, 21-25, 25-23, 25-16) and dropping a four setter to Christopher Newport (25-21, 25-16, 20-25, 25-23).

The Golden Knights moved to 2-3 on the season with the split. The team will play four matches in its home tournament next weekend, taking on Plattsburgh State, St. John Fisher, Oswego State, and Oneonta State.

In the win against Illinois Wesleyan, Clarkson spun the momentum in its favor in the third set. After each team won a set, the Titans rolled out to a 15-4 lead forcing the Knights to take a timeout. Clarkson climbed back into contention, but still trailed by five in the waning points (23-18). Kills by Allyson Treichel and Kristin Werdine sandwiched an error by Illinois Wesleyan to make the score 23-21, After a timeout by the Titans, Clarkson got an ace from Abigail Spector and a kill from Gillian Kurtic to tie the set, and the Knights got the next two points on errors to claim the game.

Kurtic had 13 kills and three aces in the win, while Werdine and Galante each recorded 12 kills. Treichel also added 11 kills. Isabelle Crow recorded 49 assists and Celestial Barrera-Lopez notched 23 digs. 

Playing back-to-back matches, the Knights struggled a little against Christopher Newport, falling by a combined 13 points in the first two sets. Clarkson won the third set by five and nearly forced a fifth set, but dropped the fourth game by two.

Galante hit .237 (12-3-38) and Werdine added 11 kills and 10 digs against CNU. Crow also had a double-double with 31 assists and 12 digs. Barrera-Lopz had a team-best 20 digs and Emma Baxter also reached double figures with 11 digs.
