A few lucky breaks a year ago for the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team could have turned a disappointing season into a playoff-bound squad, and the Golden Knights are seeking their share of good fortune this season as they look to recapture the magic that sent the team to the conference championship game in 2019.

Guided by fifth-year head coach Carter Lincoln, second-year assistant Adam Kelley, and former standout Brandon Bahr in a volunteer coaching role, the Golden Knights will look to improve upon their 4-9-3 mark from a season ago. That record could have been vastly better had the Knights not allowed late goals, especially early in the season. On four occasions, including three in the first five games, Clarkson was sent to defeat or an unnecessary tie as the opposition scored in the waning moments.

Clarkson's offense will certainly feel the loss of the steady play of three-time Liberty League All-Star Mack Walton, but the team will have the fortune of two graduate students returning for an extra season this fall. James Nicholas came to Clarkson as a grad student last fall and tied for the team lead in scoring, with his biggest contribution coming with three assists in just 734 minutes. Bobby Guilfoil will be in his first grad year with the Knights after being a part of the team for the past four seasons. Guilfoil has played mostly in the midfield and has tallied four goals in his last two years with Clarkson.

While Nicholas and Guilfoil will be the lone graduate students on the squad, there are a number of upperclassmen in the fold, especially up front and in the midfield. Seniors Taro Hayashi and Colin Burnell played key minutes on offense for the Knights, with Hayashi scoring four points thanks to a goal and two assists. Junior Nolan Grady matched Hayashi's scoring output from the midfield, and classmate Zachary Appel also contributed three points with a goal and an assist. Juniors Romano Sergi, Chris Paucar, and Evan Carfrey will be looking for additional minutes and add to the depth of the team's scoring punch. Sophomore Jack Donnelly could also see an increased role, as his minutes' totals increased as the season went on in 2021, including three 70-minute plus outings versus conference foes in the final eight days of the campaign. Clarkson's offense will also be looking for early contributions from freshmen Colin Wright, Landon Rush, Ryan Brazell, and Zach Shufelt.

In addition to the midfielders named above, junior Simon Falck and sophomore Josh Conklin will be key components part of both the offense and defense in their second season with the program. Several defensive-minded midfielders will also be back for the Knights in Paolo Martino and Gideon Amoako, while second-year Clarkson players Ben Choi and Eric McKean also seek more time. Freshmen Kyle Otis and Tristan Gilbert are also key parts of a strong freshmen class looking to make its mark with the Green and Gold.

Clarkson's defense is a year older and should be a big part of the team's success in 2022. Sophomore Kai Endo led the team in minutes played with 1367, anchoring the Knights' defense. Seniors Joey White and Michael Lanfear have been contributors throughout their previous seasons with the Knights and should also be logging plenty of minutes in the back. Sophomore Logan Drake topped 1000 minutes in his first collegiate season and will again be a key part of the team's defensive prowess. Sophomore Remi Ufheil and newcomers Tayte Wong and Christian Silvano will also vie for time in back.

The Golden Knights have four goalkeepers for 2022, but only Ian Donahue saw any game action last year, playing in five contests, with most of the action coming in early September. Sophomore Manuel Lavesa-Cesana will provide depth for the Knights, and Josh Morelli and Carter Kladstrup, both freshmen, show plenty of promise to help Clarkson return to its top defensive form of recent years.
