2022 CU Women's Soccer Preview

PreGameWSOC

Women's Soccer | 8/31/2022 11:00:00 AM

Still a team that is loaded with players with a year or less of competitive collegiate experience, the Clarkson University Women's Soccer team will be looking to take a step forward thanks to its burgeoning talent base cultivated by fourth-year head coach Zac Shaw and second-year assistant Rachel Kingston.

A year ago, the Golden Knights' roster had just a handful of seniors, and that will be the case again in 2022 as the foursome of Angelina Fahrenkrug, Delaney Holohan, Sara Kohls, and Juliette LaRock are the elders on another young Clarkson squad. The good news for the Knights comes in the way of playing time from last season as 10 of the top 14 (and eight of the top 11) in terms of minutes played will be back on the pitch for the Green and Gold.

Clarkson's sophomore class stood out as freshmen in 2021, and the core of that group is back. Chloe Hodge, the team's leader in points in her first collegiate season, headlines the team's offense, and Molly DiCaprio, who started 15 of the team's 16 games in goal with four shutouts and 69 saves, both earned Liberty League All-Star honors a year ago from opposite ends of the field. Second-year standout Emily Davis ranked second on the team in minutes played (1390) and was third in shots taken (23).

Most of the team's scoring from a year ago has returned, including the four of the top five point-producers. Hodge led the team with four goals and three assists for 11 points, while Fahrenkrug scored four times, Kohls tallied three goals, and junior Tonia Kousmanidis found the back of the net twice. Bolstering that group are juniors Aspen Tlapa and Rylee Marin, sophomore Haley Archambault, and first-year collegians Lillian Gillett and Carly Spinella.

The midfield may possess the most experience of any spot on the field for the Knights, as Davis logged significant minutes as a freshman, LaRock has played steadily for two years in that spot, and junior Emily Colby ranked eighth on the team in minutes played (892) last season. Additionally, junior transfer Maddie Lopol, coming from Iona College, should step in the lineup seamlessly.

Clarkson's depth on defense in the midfield and in back will be enviable, as will its additional size from years' past. Junior Arin Bates was fourth on the team in minutes played in 2021 (1318) and Holohan was ninth (887). Sophomore Rachel Williams is expected to play a larger role this season and junior Hailey Hansen could see more time as well. The group also has four newcomers in sophomore Grace Smith and freshmen Julia Tylar, Lily Clonan, and Paige Ford, with all of them capable of seeing considerable minutes this fall.

DiCaprio played all but 135 minutes in goal as a freshman, posting a .750 save percentage and a 1.52 goals against average. Sophomore Elise Almgren saw those other 135 minutes and played well in her chances, including an overtime shutout of crosstown rival SUNY Potsdam near the conclusion of the 2021 season. Junior Ava Pushor will also vie for time in net this year.
