Guilfoil's Early Goal Lifts Knights to 1-0 Win Over DeSales

Potsdam, NY – Graduate student Bobby Guilfoil scored in the 15th minute for the Clarkson University Men's Soccer team, and the lone score held up as the Golden Knights began the 2022 season with a 1-0 win over DeSales University on Friday afternoon at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights will take on Keene State Saturday afternoon while DeSales heads to Plattsburgh to close out its early season road trip.

Clarkson controlled play in the early going, but didn't have much in the way of chances other than a Tayte Wong attempt in the fourth minute that was easily picked up by Bulldogs' goalie Tyler Horton. However, Horton didn't have much of a shot on Guilfoil's attempt 11 minutes later. The play began with Kai Endo stealing the ball near midfield and playing it back to Logan Drake. Drake then carried the ball up the right sideline, nearly losing possession when he got deep into the Bulldogs' defensive territory. Drake played the ball back with a short pass to Josh Conklin, who then found Guilfoil open just outside of the penalty area. From there, Guilfoil hit a left-footed thronker to the far side of the net, putting the Knights up 1-0 midway through the 15th minute.

It would be a bit before Clarkson took another shot, but it was even longer for DeSales, as the Bulldogs could only muster one shot in the entire half.

The play evened a little in the second half, but again Clarkson had the better of the chances with a couple of near misses in front and a few headers finding the open arms of Horton. The Knights nearly picked up a goal early in the second half from a shot by Christian Silvano, but Horton denied the attempt, while Colin Wright, Kai Endo, and Silvano were denied in quick succession around the 55-60 minute mark. Midway through the half, DeSales had some chances with some corner kicks, but freshman goalkeeper Carter Kladstrup either collected the crosses or the passes into the box were cleared away by the Golden Knights' defenders. DeSales had one last chance in the waning seconds, but Kladstrup corralled the attempt and hung on to close out the game.

Clarkson finished with a 16-4 advantage in shots (9-2 in shots on goal) and a 9-3 lead in corner kick chances. Horton made eight saves for DeSales, while Kladstrup stopped two shots for his first collegiate shutout.
