Knights Score Season-High Six Goals in Battle of Ranked Squads, Down SLU 6-3

Potsdam, NY – In front of an enthusiastic, engaged, and record-setting crowd, the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team came alive in the third period with four goals to out duel Route 11 rival St. Lawrence University, 6-3, in a non-league matchup in front of 3223 fans at Cheel Arena.

The fifth-ranked Golden Knights remained unbeaten thanks to their season-high six goals, improving to 12-0-1 overall. Sixth-rated St. Lawrence dropped just its second game of the season, falling to 10-2-0 on the year. The two teams will meet again in another non-conference contest on Saturday at Appleton Arena.

It took a few moments for either team to get much in the way of legitimate scoring chances. Roughly five minutes in, Shelby Laidlaw picked up a rebound after a shot from the top of the left circle with half of the net open, but her shot went just wide. St. Lawrence had a chance of its own five minutes later when Kennedy Wilson found herself on a breakaway as a loose puck found her stick near the center stripe. Wilson skated in for a one-on-one with Michelle Pasiechnyk, but Wilson's forehand was denied on a sprawling save by the Clarkson goalkeeper.

Both teams would find the back of the net in the latter half of the period. Clarkson's first goal came shortly after Pasiechnyk's save on the breakaway. Anne Cherkowski skated in along the right side before sending the puck back in front to Dominique Petrie. From there, Petrie took a few stabs at the puck and slipped it past Saints' goaltender Emma-Sofie Nordstrom. Clarkson's lead would be short-lived, however, as the Saints tied the score at 1-1 just three minutes later. The Saints played from behind the net, and once the circuit was completed a pass slid just past the crease to Ally McLeod, who knocked the puck in at 13:40.

Clarkson would end up taking the lead right before the first intermission as Nicole Gosling did her part twice to both keep the scoring opportunity alive and also netting the goal. The puck almost left the zone on a pass along the left boards, but Gosling had just enough stick blade to keep the puck in, sending it back around to reset the play. After a few passes, the puck was back on Gosling's stick near the blue line, and she took a few strides to the top of the slot, converting a wrist shot at 18:08 for a 2-1 Clarkson lead, with Darcie Lappan and Kirstyn McQuigge assisting.

At the start of the second stanza, the Knights looked as if they had their third score of the game on a Jenna Goodwin backhand in front of the crease, but the goal was called off due to goaltender interference earlier in the play upon review. The Green and Gold had more opportunities when St. Lawrence was whistled for two penalties, but the first call resulted in only three blocked shots, while the second saw Nordstrom produce three saves before the Saints could kill off the extra-player opportunity. A third Saints' penalty was called near the midway point of the period, but again the Saints were up to the task allowing just two shots with only one on goal in the final seconds of the power play.

The Saints had two chances on the power play at the conclusion of the second period, skating up a player for close to the final four minutes of the period, but Pasiechnyk denied seven shots on goal in that stretch, keeping the score 2-1.

For the first few minutes of the third period, the teams skated freely with just a handful of chances making it past the first line of defense. Eventually, the Saints knotted the game back up at 2-2. An icing call put the puck back at the circle in the Clarkson defensive end, and though the Knights had possession for most of the next few ticks, the puck skipped out to the top of the right circle where Melissa Jeffries took a shot one step in. A few ricochets saw Kennedy Wilson credited with the goal at 6:29.

St. Lawrence appeared to have momentum on its side when the Knights were called for a penalty just 90 seconds after the game was tied up, but Pasiechnyk again made the saves necessary, and a broken play allowed Clarkson to score shorthanded. A failure to keep the puck in the Clarkson defensive zone allowed for a 2-on-1 as Baylee Kirwan won a race to the puck and sent a pass across ice to Sena Catterall, who made a few moves in easily flipped the puck past Nordstrum at 9:36.

The momentum was clearly back in Clarkson's favor when St. Lawrence was called for a delay of game penalty, putting the Knights up a skater. After working the puck around on several connected passes, Anne Cherkowski took a shot from the top of the right circle, only to be denied by Nordstrum. However, the SLU goaltender was unable to pick it clean and Brooke McQuigge cleaned up the rebound at 11:23 to put the score at 4-2.

Only a few moments later, a slashing penalty put the Saints on the power play, and St. Lawrence finally delivered with the player-advantage. Mae Batherson took a shot from the top of the slot only to be denied by the left pad of Pasiechnyk, but the puck was collected by Taylor Lum on the doorstep, and Lum knocked the puck into the otherwise unguarded net with just over seven minutes to play.

A penalty gave the Knights a power-play chance that came up empty, but it was enough time to keep the Saints from mounting much more offense. As the minutes ticked away, the Saints looked ready to pull the goaltender, covering up the puck at 2:09 with hopes of winning the next faceoff for a final rush. It would not come to pass, however, as the Knights won the next faceoff and Darcie Lappan skated through the slot with a wrist shot over the stick of Nordstrum at 17:58. Clarkson tacked on an empty-net goal as Petrie recorded her second of the contest with just under a minute to play.

Clarkson finished with a 33-32 advantage in shots on goal and had 62 attempts overall to the Saints' 50. Clarkson was 1-for-5 on the power play and the Saints were held off the board in their player-advantage chances at 0-for-3. Pasiechnyk finished with 29 saves, and Nordstrum denied 27 shots. Four different Clarkson players registered multi-point games, led by Dominique Petrie's pair of goals.
