Second Straight Shutout for Clarkson in 3-0 Victory Over Robert Morris

Potsdam, NY – Two goals in the final nine minutes helped turn a close contest into a less stressful one for the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team as the Golden Knights picked up their second straight shutout with a 3-0 win over Robert Morris University Saturday afternoon at Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights improved to 6-0 on the season while the Colonials saw their mark fall to 3-3. Clarkson will be on the road next weekend, taking on Boston College.

Although the first period saw Clarkson with a lopsided shot total (16-4 shots on goal), the Golden Knights came up empty in the opening 20 minutes thanks to Lucy Phillips of Robert Morris.

It appeared that the second period might be a repeat of the first when the Knights saw the time roll to zero without another goal. However, that did not include a play that needed to be put under review 70 seconds earlier. With the puck in the Clarkson defensive end, a pass out to the point was tipped away by Rebecca Morissette, creating a 2-on-1 in the other direction. Morissette held the puck and a defender for as long as she could, eventually sending a pass in front of the crease to Sena Catterall. It appeared the puck snuck through, but play went on without a whistle until the end of the frame. At that point, the officials watched the replay and confirmed that the goal was good, giving Clarkson a 1-0 lead heading into the second intermission.

Robert Morris didn't have much in the way of offense in the third period, and the Knights simply could not break through in the first 10 minutes of the stanza. The Colonials were whistled for a penalty near the midway point, allowing the Knights to skate up a player for two minutes. About halfway through that stretch, the Knights worked the puck around the outside, with Keira Hurry on the left circle sending it to the point to Sidney Fess, and another pass found the stick of Jenna Goodwin, but only for a split second, as she slapped a shot around the skates of a Robert Morris defender and over the stick of Phillips at 11:42.

Clarkson would pick up kind of an odd insurance goal in the final four minutes when the Colonials pulled Phillips for the extra attacker. Rhea Hicks gained possession along the right boards in the Clarkson defensive end and found Haley Winn under no pressure near the top of the slot. Winn they chipped a pass ahead off the boards to get around a defender and before Morissette was in the offensive zone, she deflected the puck with enough force to slip into the empty net at 16:55.

Clarkson finished with a 40-11 edge in shots on goal. Holly Gruber notched 11 saves for the shutout and Phillips made 37 saves for Robert Morris.
