Minotti Picks Up Third Shutout of Season with 2-0 Blanking of RPI

Potsdam, NY – Julia Minotti stopped 14 shots for her third shutout of the season as the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team picked up a 2-0 victory over Rensselaer in ECAC Hockey action Saturday afternoon at Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights improved to 9-3-0 and 3-1-0 in conference games while the Engineers fell to 6-6-2 and 2-3-1.

The shutout was Minotti's first in league play this year, her third ever against an ECAC Hockey opponent, and the eighth of her career.

Grade 'A' chances were hard to come by in the first period, though the Golden Knights did cash in early while on a power play in the opening minutes. Following a tripping penalty, the Knights found the back of the net about halfway through their extra-skater chance. Passes around the outside went point to point, finding Anne Cherkowski on the right side. She dropped a pass back to Nicole Gosling at the slot and one more pass located Madison Chantler at the top of the left circle. Chantler took a stride or two forward and wristed a shot off the back post at 5:11 to make it 1-0 in favor of the Knights.

Clarkson had another good scoring chance late in the period as a long pass found Cherkowski just onside to create a 1-on-1, but Reese Keating was there to make a save with her left blocker at 17:17.

The second period was similar to the first as true scoring opportunities did not come often for either team. Chantler almost gave Clarkson a second score in the first few minutes on a back door pass to the right post only to see Keating slide over to deflect the puck off target at the last moment. Midway through the period, the Knights were tilting the ice in their favor but came up empty on a handful of chances in close, including Sena Catterall ringing one off the post with under five minutes to go. After leading in shots on goal in the first period 7-5, the second was nearly identical for the Knights as they had a 7-6 edge in the middle 20 minutes.

In the third the Knights had some excellent chances in the early going as Chantler was stuffed on a 1-on-1 and Shelby Laidlaw was similarly denied off the rebound just two minutes in. Sena Catterall's shot was covered up two minutes later to keep the score at 1-0. It was not just stops by RPI's Keating, however, as Julia Minotti had an impressive save near the five-minute mark when a tipped shot and rebound were denied near the far post.

After the Engineers went without a shot on the power play midway through the third period, RPI was looking to pull its goaltender starting around the three-minute mark, but Clarkson maintained possession to keep it from happening. Eventually the Engineers had Keating skate to the bench for an extra attacker, but almost immediately after Clarkson took advantage. The puck was lost behind the Clarkson net and scooted around the boards near the blue line where Anne Cherkowski was able to gain control. She skated through the neutral zone and into the RPI zone, shooting around a defender into the unguarded net at 18:24 to make it 2-0.

Clarkson finished with a 21-14 edge in shots and went 1-for-2 on the power play while the Engineers were scoreless in their two chances with an extra skater.
