Barnum Surpasses 150 Career Goals in Knights 18-13 Win Over Hood

Frederick, MD – After allowing six goals in the first 15 minutes of Wednesday's game, the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team's defense shut down Hood College, as the Golden Knights finished off their spring trip in Maryland with an 18-13 win.

Clarkson improved to 5-1 on the season while the Blazers fell to 3-6. The Green and Gold will host Bard College in Liberty League play this weekend at Hantz Field.

Both offenses were clicking in the first quarter, as Hood rolled out to a 6-4 lead in the first 12 minutes. A late goal from Madelynn Barnum brought the Knights back to within one, but both teams were scoring on most of their shots, with Hood converting six goals on eight shots and Clarkson recording five goals on seven shots.

While the Knights' offense kept moving forward, the Blazers were stymied by the Clarkson defense in the second. Key parts came to limiting Hood's chances as the Knights won six of the eight draws to help control play. The Blazers were only able to pick up two goals late in the quarter due to Clarkson penalties, and even the Knights scored first while down a player when Barnum scored only 17 seconds after a card. That score for Barnum was the 150th goal of her career, a total that only three other Clarkson Women's Lacrosse players have reached in program history. Hood would get man-up goals at 1:51 and with 11 seconds remaining to cut the margin to two at the break (10-8).

Little changed in the third quarter. Again, the Knights won six of eight draws and allowed just four total shots. The Knights pulled away late in the period, scoring five times in the final 5:10 for a seven-goal lead (16-9). Clarkson scored the opening goal of the fourth quarter and held the Blazers off the board for close to seven more minutes, allowing the Knights to cruise to the win down the stretch.

The Knights allowed just only three goals in a stretch of 40 minutes from the end of the first quarter to the middle of the fourth quarter.

Julia Lavarnway scored nine points thanks to two goals and seven assists, while Madelynn Barnum chipped in seven points (6-1-7), three groundballs, and two caused turnovers. Hailey Millington also scored four goals and Makenna Cassin scored three times. Rylee Ganter and Millington also had three groundballs apiece. Jennaca McGill (4), Riley Donovan (3), and Clare Tucker (1) combined for eight saves in the Clarkson crease. For Hood, Mackenzie Demaio had six points (4-2-6), five groundballs, and two caused turnovers.
