Clarkson Remains Unbeaten in Liberty League Play with 12-9 Victory Over Rochester

Potsdam, NY – Senior Madelynn Barnum celebrated Senior Day with a big game on offense for the Clarkson University Women's Lacrosse team as the Golden Knights picked up their third straight win in Liberty League play with a 12-9 victory over University of Rochester on Saturday afternoon at Hantz Field.

The Golden Knights improved to 8-1 overall and 3-0 in conference games, while Rochester fell to 4-4 and 1-2. Clarkson plays host to 20th-ranked Ithaca next Friday and then faces second-ranked William Smith on Saturday.

While the Golden Knights never trailed in Saturday's contest, the game was tied on five separate occasions before Clarkson could finally gain the slightest bit of breathing room. Roughly five minutes into the third quarter, Julia Lavarnway scored unassisted to put the Knights up 7-6, and about two minutes later, Madelynn Barnum scored off a pass from Lavarnway to give Clarkson its first two-goal advantage since back in the first quarter. Although Rochester briefly got back within one, another goal from Barnum while up a player gave the Knights their two-goal lead back.

Although the fourth quarter was close, the Knights were able to push their lead further as Kaitlyn McNamara and Barnum scored 56 seconds apart to make it a four-goal game. Twice Rochester brought the game back within three, but the Knights controlled possession for most of the final 90 seconds to keep the Yellowjackets from making a late comeback.

Barnum finished with seven points on six goals and an assist to go along with three groundballs and three caused turnovers. Julia Lavarnway added five points on two goals and three assists and Gabby Cranfield also chipped in three assists. On the defensive end, Ireland Morgia caused two turnovers and posted four groundballs while Rylee Ganter, Maeve Bartell, and Meredith James each had two caused turnovers and two groundballs. Hailey Millington was key on draws, picking up seven in the midfield.

For Rochester, Grace Crochiere scored a goal and posted six draws, five groundballs, and two caused turnovers. Emily Schillinger recorded four points with three goals and an assist, and Anna Rogers notched three assists.

Clarkson finished with a 26-23 edge in shots (19-18 shots on goal) and a 21-12 advantage in groundballs. Jennaca McGill stopped nine shots in the crease for the Knights, while Ava Saffren made seven saves for Rochester.
