Knights Survive Last Second Shot to Win Fourth League Contest

Potsdam, NY – Braeden Burns closed out on a desperation 3-pointer from the corner by Bard's Sean Wilcox and the heave came up short as the Clarkson University Men's Basketball team survived for a 64-63 victory against Bard College on Friday evening at Alumni Gymnasium.

The Knights improved to 8-4 overall and 4-1 in the Liberty League while Bard dropped to 7-4 and 2-3. The Green and Gold hope to remain unbeaten in 2025 when they take on Vassar College on Saturday afternoon.

After a turnover by Clarkson on its final possession, Bard had several looks at the basket in its final chance. A layup bounced out and two more somewhat controlled tips rattled out as well before a loose ball was finally picked up by the Raptors and a timeout was called. After another timeout allowed the teams to see the setup of the other, Bard had to settle for an off balance 3-point attempt from the corner with no time for an offensive put back.

The teams traded runs in the first half, as Bard began the game with nine of the first 14 points through a stretch of four minutes. That leads disappeared rather quickly thanks to a Braeden Burns 3-pointer that saw Clarkson score 15 straight, capped by a Ben Rappa 3-pointer at the 10:28 mark. Bard slowed the Clarkson scoring pace and responded with a 13-4 run in a stretch of less than four minutes to tie the game when Lucas Tovar converted in the lane with 2:01 to go. However, Clarkson would never relinquish the lead thanks to Finn Cork scoring a pair of baskets. Lorenzo Rappa then hit a jumper at the buzzer to give Clarkson a five-point edge at the break.
Braeden Burns posted 10 points in the first half and Finn Cork contributed across the board in the opening 20 minutes with eight points, five rebounds, and four assists.

Out of the break, the two teams stayed close but Clarkson kept a safe margin over the Raptors. Jalen Umstead hit a 3-pointer at 11:53 to reduce the Knights' lead to four, only to see Clarkson go on a 9-0 run in a two-minute stretch to take its biggest lead of the game (52-39).  The Knights still led by that margin with roughly five minutes to go, but Bard began to chip away, climbing all the way back to within one when Rowan Heinze maneuvered his way for a layup with 1:38 to go. On the next possession, Steve DeRegis nailed a step back 3-pointer with 1:10 only to see Laz Panagiotounis score one from the top of the key with about 40 seconds to go. Fortunately for the home team, those were the final points of the contest.

Burns scored 19 points to lead all scorers, shooting 7-for-14 from the floor. Cork then produced 15 points (7-for-11 from the field) with eight rebounds and six assists, and Steve DeRegis chipped in 11 points, including the clutch 3-pointer late in the game, his only make from beyond the arc in the contest.

For Bard, Sean Wilcox finished with 18 points and 11 rebounds, while Panagiotounis had 11 points to go with five boards and four assists.
