Goffredo Scores Twice in Knights' 4-0 Win Over Union

Schenectady, NY – Both the penalty kill and power play shined for the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team as the seventh-ranked Golden Knights delivered two power play goals and kept Union College off the scoreboard in a 4-0 ECAC Hockey win Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights improved to 18-5-1 overall and 9-3-0 in ECAC Hockey, while Union dropped to 8-15-1 and 5-8-0. Clarkson will be back at home next weekend, serving as hosts for Yale University and Brown University.

Clarkson dominated the first period, holding Union to just one shot on goal, an attempt from the top of the slot in transition that was easily blocked aside. Meanwhile, the Knights started slow in terms of shots on goal in the first 10 minutes, but got things going while on the power play just as time expired off the penalty. With eight seconds left, Caroline Goffredo won the faceoff on the right circle, dropping it back to Keira Hurry. Hurry went across ice to Sidney Fess, and her shot found its way through the leg pads, possibly with some help from Goffredo who was in front of the net providing an obstacle for the defense.

Only 16 seconds later, the Knights scored even strength again. Gaining possession behind the net two quick passes went to the left circle, allowing Goffredo some space on the right side for a 2-on-2. Goffredo never gave up possession though, carrying the puck in on the right side and choosing a backhand to go five-hole at 12:24 for a 2-0 Golden Knights' advantage.

Union had a better stretch in the second period thanks to two power play opportunities, but kept the Garnet Chargers chances to a minimum by keeping the puck in the neutral zone for wide stretches of time despite being down a skater. Clarkson had a 15-11 edge in total shots, but the two teams tied in shots on goal at seven apiece as the score remained 2-0.

In the third period, Clarkson continued to sparkle on the penalty kill, keeping Union's power play unit quiet with just four shots on the first four power play attempts. The offensive special teams came through late in the period to put the game away. With less than 20 seconds left in the power play, Clarkson maintained possession with a pass from Madison Chantler finding Sydney Fess at the top of the right circle near the slot. Fess's shot attempt was then redirected by Goffredo with seven seconds left on the power play, putting the Knights up 3-0. Clarkson picked up an insurance goal two minutes later to put the game away. Haley Winn dropped off a pass at the point for Anne Cherkowski and she flung a wrist shot on net where Sena Catterall was camped in front of the net, and Catterall redirected the attempt through the pads for a 4-0 lead at 15:50.

The Knights finished with a 70-28 advantage in shots, the same ratio as their 35-14 edge in shots on goal. Clarkson was 2-for-5 on the power play and held the Garnet Chargers without a goal in four power play chances. Adreanna Doucette turned aside all 14 shots for the shutout in her second collegiate start, while Monja Wagner made 31 saves for Union.
