Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Gosling Scores Twice but Knights Fall to Colgate, 4-2

Potsdam, NY – Despite a significant advantage in shots and two lengthy power play chances, the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team dropped a 4-2 decision to an opportunistic Colgate squad in ECAC Hockey action Saturday afternoon at Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights slipped to 16-5-1 and 7-3-0 in league play while the Raiders improved to 17-5-0 and 8-2-0 in conference games. Clarkson will be on the road next weekend when it takes on Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Friday and then Union College Saturday.

Although Clarkson held a 37-18 advantage in shots on goal and saw Colgate whistled for two game misconducts, the Raiders found a way to upend the Knights on Saturday.

Clarkson had the better opportunities in the first period as Jenna Goodwin was denied on a breakaway thanks to a Colgate back check with just over four minutes off the clock and a Nicole Gosling shot was tipped off the left post with 3:30 remaining. It appeared as if Clarkson would have a lengthy opportunity when Kristyna Kaltounkova was shown the gate late in the opening period when upon review she was called for spearing. What looked like a five-minute opportunity actually put the Knights down a goal as Colgate scored shorthanded just a few seconds into the penalty kill. Sara Stewart broke up a pass and Emma Pais gained possession in the Clarkson slot, creating a 2-on-1 the other way for the pair. Pais chose to keep the puck and wristed in a shot with only 10 seconds to go in the period to put the Raiders up 1-0.

Colgate was doing a good job of limiting Clarkson's chances early in the second period as the power play continued, but a hooking call put the Knights on a 5-on-3 and the Green and Gold cashed in. Anne Cherkowski brought the puck back into the zone and Haley Winn picked up possession, skating down near the goal line. Winn then sent a pass back into the slot, finding the stick of Nicole Gosling for a one-timer at 2:51, tying the score 1-1 on the power play.

The Raiders would go back on top near the midway point of the second when Madeline Palumbo found Sara Stewart on the doorstep for a tap in at the 9:00 mark. Clarkson twice had a chance to tie the game, shorthanded no less, shortly after that score but Bridget Kerwin's attempt skipped through the crease and a 2-on-1 attempt from Madison Chantler was stopped. Colgate took advantage of the missed opportunities and went up 3-1 near the end of the period. Elyssa Biederman took a couple of hits near the right side of the goal, but her pass found Kaia Malachino in front, and Malachino's backhand gave the Raiders a two-goal advantage at 18:01.

Clarkson was fortunate enough to score late in the period to keep things close. A hand went up with about 12 seconds to go in the frame, but the Knights wouldn't need the extra skater to score as Nicole Gosling utilized a screen from Rhea Hicks to beat Hannah Murphy with just five seconds before the horn.

Emma Pais returned the Raiders to a two-goal lead with a nifty move just short of the blue line. With Colgate on the power play, Pais appeared as if she would go towards the boards to bring the puck in, but instead went back inside and had plenty of space, going to the opposite post with her wrist shot to make it 4-2 with just two minutes off the clock in the third.

It looked like Clarkson would have a chance to pull closer and possibly even when Colgate was whistled for another five-minute major when Neena Brick was called for a contact to the head penalty near center ice. However, none of Clarkson's 12 shots, including six on goal, found the back of the net, allowing Colgate to breathe a sigh of relief.

Clarkson was 1-for-5 on the power play and the Raiders were 1-for-3. The Knights also had a 37-18 edge in shots on goal and an 82-39 lead in shots overall. Julia Minotti made 14 saves for the Knights and Hannah Murphy stopped 35 shots for the visitors.
