Clarkson opens home schedule with UCONN

The Clarkson University Women's Hockey team will face one of its toughest early-season challenges this weekend when the Golden Knights welcome the University of Connecticut Huskies to Cheel Arena. Puck drop is set for 6:00 pm on Friday and a 2:00 pm start on Saturday, in what promises to be a high-energy non-conference matchup between two nationally recognized programs.
Clarkson enters the season on the heels of a strong 2024-25 campaign, finishing 25-13-2 overall with a reputation for offensive balance and defensive consistency. The Golden Knights outscored their opponents 136-72 last year, averaging 3.4 goals per game while giving up just 1.8. Special teams have been a major strength, with Clarkson's power play converting at an impressive 32.7% last season. Under the guidance of head coach Matt Desrosiers, who owns more than 400 career victories and three NCAA national championships, Clarkson remains one of the premier programs in women's college hockey.
UConn comes to Potsdam riding the momentum of a historic rise in Hockey East. The Huskies captured both the regular-season and tournament championships last season, finishing with a program-best 25-8-5 record and making their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance. They return a strong core, including leading scorers Claire Murdoch and Ashley Allard, as well as standout goaltender Tia Chan. The addition of Boston College transfer Julia Pellerin adds more scoring punch to a lineup that has embraced head coach Chris MacKenzie's style.
This non-conference battle provides an intriguing test of styles. Clarkson will look to push the pace with its deep forward group and potent power play, while UConn brings a defensively disciplined, transition-oriented approach that has fueled its recent success. The Huskies view matchups like this as key opportunities to strengthen their NCAA Tournament résumé, while the Golden Knights aim to protect home ice against one of Hockey East's best.
