Goffredo's Third Period Score Forces Game 3 In Knights ECAC Quarterfinal Series Versus Quinnipiac

Potsdam, NY – Holly Gruber made 24 timely saves and Caroline Goffredo scored midway through the third period to extend the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team's postseason as the Golden Knights evened their ECAC Quarterfinals series with Quinnipiac with a 2-1 victory on Saturday afternoon at Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights improved to 23-11-2 on the season while the Bobcats fell to 22-11-4. The two top-10 ranked teams need a win on Sunday to advance to the ECAC Semifinals.

Quinnipiac had plenty of grade 'A' chances in the first period as the Bobcats controlled the pace with 24 total shots in the first 20 minutes, but Holly Gruber was there to deny and frustrate the visitors on the second day of the series. That would change with a late goal as Quinnipiac would again strike first. The Bobcats brought the puck into the zone with 44 seconds left in the period and battled for possession for much of that time behind the Clarkson cage. It looked like the Knights might clear the puck from in front of the crease, but Zoe Uens stepped in front to intercept the clearance and took a shot from the top of the slot that rattled off the bottom of the crossbar and in at 19:32 of the first period.

Quinnipiac controlled the opening period to the tune of a 24-10 edge in total shots and an 11-5 lead in shots on goal, but that would change in the second period as the Knights came out with renewed legs and pace. Although the shots on goal in the second were relatively even, barely in favor of Clarkson (7-6), the majority of those shots for the visitors came late in the stanza, and by that point the Green and Gold had knotted up the contest.

In the first minute of a power play for the Knights, Clarkson seemingly scored out of nowhere. From the right circle, Rhea Hicks won the faceoff and the puck slid back to Nicole Gosling straddling the right circle and slot. She quickly wristed a shot to tie the game at 7:38 of the second.

Each goalie made some solid saves in the first 10 minutes of the third period as everyone on the ice understood the importance of the next goal. The game-winner came near the midway point of the frame as Clarkson created an odd-player rush with Baylee Kirwan carrying the puck into the Quinnipiac zone. It was Jenna Smellie that would reach the puck below the goal line, outskating the rest of the pack to maintain possession for the Knights. Smellie then dropped the puck back to Kirwan at the bottom of the right circle, and Kirwan found Caroline Goffredo in open space in the slot where Goffredo was able to finish at 9:23 to put the Knights up 2-1.

With nearly four minutes remaining in the contest, Quinnipiac pulled goaltender Kaley Doyle for an extra skater, which allowed the Bobcats to put near constant pressure on the Knights. Only a brief icing call saw Doyle return to the net, as many of Clarkson's skaters were forced to remain on the ice down the stretch, including defenders Haley Winn and Nicole Gosling. That did not prevent the Knights from putting pressure on the puck near the blue line and keeping shots to a minimum, as the Green and Gold escaped with the win to force a third game in the series.

Quinnipiac finished with a 25-19 edge in shots on goal, though Clarkson held a 57-53 advantage in total attempts. Both teams had two power play opportunities, though only the Knights would score while up a skater. Gruber had 24 stops for Clarkson and Doyle made 17 denials for the Bobcats.
