Knights Post Second Straight Shutout Over Saint Michael's

Potsdam, NY – It took a little longer to get going compared to Friday, but the Clarkson University Women's Hockey team won a second straight lopsided decision over Saint Michael's on Saturday afternoon, downing the Purple Knights 9-0 at Cheel Arena.

The Golden Knights, ranked 11th in the latest USCHO.com poll, improved to 13-6-2 overall while Saint Michael's fell to 1-17-0 on the year.  Clarkson now enters the heart of the ECAC Hockey season, hitting the road to take on Cornell and Colgate next weekend.

Unlike Friday night's contest, the Golden Knights took some time getting on the scoreboard as Saint Michael's defense was a little more up to the task. The Purple Knights were busy putting their sticks in the way of passing lanes, keeping Clarkson from getting the clean opportunities that it did in the previous match up between the two teams. That didn't stop Clarkson from controlling possession and the pace of the contest, even while on the penalty kill. The Golden Knights had several chances while trying to end a power play for the visitors.

That strong penalty kill pushed the momentum further in Clarkson's favor, and the Knights quickly scored once back even. Manon le Scodan picked up possession after ricochet in front and then flipped the puck back down to Janelle Evans at the bottom of the right circle. Evans then located Sara Manness just in front of the crease, and she was able to whack the puck in past Saint Michael's goaltender Annika Lavender at 12:29 for the first goal of the game.

Having broken through with its first goal of the game, Clarkson scored twice more in the next five minutes. The first came off a hard slap shot from Greta Brezenski just above the top of the right circle, as her blast made it 2-0 at 15:41 with assists going to Morgan Walton and Keira Hurry. About 90 seconds later it was Jaela Carter with a wrist shot from the left circle at 17:17, as le Scodan and Sara Manness picked up their second points of the contest with assists on the goal.

Saint Michael's had perhaps its best scoring chance of the weekend on a breakaway in the first minute of the second period when Brianna Jarvis found some open space, but her attempt was denied by a sliding stop from Aneta Senkova. Shortly after the stop, Clarkson added a pair of quick goals to make it 5-0. The first came on a backhand by Shelby Laidlaw after she picked up a rebound off a shot from the left point by Jaela Carter at 2:14. Less than a minute later, it was another rebound in front of the crease when Raedyn Spademan knocked in the shot by Andrea Trnkova from the right point.

The Knights added their third goal of the period and sixth of the game around the midway point of the contest. Jenna Smellie forced a turnover in the neutral zone to create a quick 3-on-2 as Shelby Laidlaw once again took advantage of a team not quite ready to defense, wristing in a shot from the slot at 12:02 to make it 6-0.

Clarkson kept the offense rolling in the third period, picking up its seventh goal of the contest. Rhea Hicks gained possession in the neutral zone and carried the puck deep into the slot to draw some defenders and then flipped a pass over to an open Sena Catterall at the bottom of the left circle for a goal at 5:48. Kate Manness also picked up an assist on the play. Clarkson tacked on another score just after the media timeout on a quick transition, as Andrea Trnkova sent the puck forward to Lara Beecher in the neutral zone and she found Sena Catterall ahead of the play. The senior quickly did a couple of dekes to elude Lavender for the goal at 10:47.

The Green and Gold added its ninth score of the contest when Rhea Hicks found the back of the net at 14:14. She had a chance at a clean goal, but couldn't quite find the handle for the look and the loose puck found the stick of Lara Beecher. Her shot was denied, but Hicks was able to outmaneuver the goalie to tap the puck over the goal line. Megan McKay was also awarded an assist on the play.

Sixteen players recorded a point for the Golden Knights in a very spread out scoring sheet. Ten players had multi-points games, including two goal efforts from both Laidlaw and Catterall.

Clarkson finished the game with a 61-12 edge in shots on goal and a 109-17 advantage in shots overall. Lavender made 52 stops for the Purple Knights and Senkova denied 12 shots for her first collegiate shutout for Clarkson.
