Benway Leads Knights at Liberty League Championships

Canton, NY - Sophomore Alex Benway (Queensbury, NY) paced the Clarkson University Cross Country squad at the Liberty League Championships Saturday afternoon, placing ninth overall in the 8,000-meter race held at Ronald C. Hoffmann Cross Country Course on the campus of St. Lawrence University. 

The Golden Knights' men finished in fourth out of six teams with 105 points. St. Lawrence led the way with 18, followed by Rensselaer (56), Vassar (98), Clarkson, Union (135), and Hobart (160). 

On the women's side, the Knights finished fifth with 153 points, outlasting William Smith (161). St. Lawrence (21), Rensselaer (55), Vassar (62) and Union (111) took the top four spots in the 6,000-meter women's race.

Benway finished the 8K in 26 minutes, 50 seconds, just 1:15 off the pace of the leader. Sophomore Neal Campbell (Queensbury, NY), senior Andrew Nadeau (Irondequoit, NY) and sophomore Matt Gammariello (Webster, NY) followed for the Knights in a close group, coming in 32nd, 34th, and 35th, respectively. Sophomore Tim Sick (Chambersburg, PA) rounded out the Clarkson scoring with a 47th-place showing.

For the women, the top five were a tightly-bunched group as well with sophomores Maureen Hill (Latham, NY), Audrey Keene (Hilton, NY), and Bethann Parmelee (Waverly, NY) leading the group in 40th, 42nd, and 47th place, followed by freshman Rachel Bachman (Queensbury, NY) and Jessica Hernandez (Owego, NY) in 50th and 53rd. Hill had the top time with 26:18.
