With goals from four different players, another steady performance in goal by sophomore Paul Karpowich (Thunder Bay, ONT) and a strong effort on the penalty kill, the Clarkson University Hockey team completed a weekend sweep in ECAC Hockey action at Cheel Arena by defeating Quinnipiac University 4-1 on Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Knights, who defeated Princeton 4-3 on Friday, won back-to-back games in league play for the first time since January 23-24, 2009. Clarkson improved its record to 7-20-3 overall and to 3-13-2 in ECAC Hockey.

Juniors Corey Tamblyn (Bobcaygeon, ONT) and Scott Freeman (Whitby, ONT), and seniors Tim Marks (Brownville, NY) and Matt Beca (Mississauga, ONT) scored the goals to complete the Green and Gold’s most productive offensive weekend in league play this season. Karpowich posted 21 saves, including 10 in the first period.

Quinnipiac (15-13-2, 9-9-0) had the first eight power plays in the game, but after the Bobcats scored on their first man-advantage opportunity, the Knights shut them down the rest of the way. For the game, Quinnipiac went 1-of-8 on the power play, while Clarkson did not convert on its only man-advantage opportunity, which came with less than four minutes to play.

Coming off a 5-0 win the night before at St. Lawrence, Quinnipiac struck first against the Knights with a power-play goal at 9:58. Sophomore Scott Zurevinski (Saskatoon, SASK) took a pass at the top of the right circle and fired off a quick wrist shot with just three seconds left in the Bobcats’ man-advantage for his 12th goal of the season. Defensemen Zach Hansen and Zach Davies assisted.

At 13:47, Clarkson tied the score as Tamblyn continued his goal-scoring streak with his eighth goal of the season. Tamblyn, who has tallied a goal in five straight games, found a loose puck at center ice and skated down the right wing, where he fired off a shot from along the boards that beat Quinnipiac goaltender Dan Clark through the five-hole. Tamblyn’s goal ended Clarke’ shutout streak at 151:19. Senior defenseman Jeremiah Crowe (Kenmore, NY) assisted.

Despite being a man down for over half of the second period, the Knights took a 3-1 lead through 40 minutes. Clarkson’s captain Freeman one-timed a pass in slot after a behind-the-net pass from Tamblyn at 3:28 for his sixth goal of the season. Junior Brandon DeFazio (Oakville, ONT) also assisted on the game-winner.

Shortly after killing off the Bobcats’ sixth power play of the game, the Knights made it 3-1 as Marks connected on a shot from between the circles for his fourth goal of the year. Sophomores Nick Tremblay (Candiac, QUE) and Jake Morley (Ogdensburg, NY) assisted. The Knights were called for five consecutive penalties in the middle frame and spent 11:19 in the box.
