Ed Rowe '57, a former Clarkson University Hockey all-star and an inaugural member of Clarkson’s Athletic Hall of Fame, passed away at Peterborough, ONT Regional Health Centre on Monday after seven years with Alzheimer's disease.
Perhaps the most prolific scorer in college hockey history, Rowe, a 5-10, 160-pound center, skated in 66 games for Clarkson from 1954-57 and averaged 2.76 points a game. A two-time All-America selection (1956, 1957), Rowe is among the elite of the Golden Knights’ all-time scoring leaders with 182 points on 87 goals and 95 assists. From 1955 through 1957, he set an NCAA record scoring at least one point in 38 consecutive games.
“Ed is a big part of Clarkson’s history and the Golden Knights’ successful hockey tradition," said Clarkson Athletic Director Steve Yianoukos. "On behalf of the entire University our heartfelt condolences go out to Frances and the whole family."
Rowe, who was inducted into the University’s Hall of Fame in 1992, was the Knight's leading scorer during the undefeated season of 1955-56 scoring 65 points on 27 goals and 38 assists as Clarkson skated to a 23-0 mark. He was captain of the 1956-57 team during his senior season, which posted a 19-3 record and made Clarkson's first appearance in the NCAA Tournament. A top-notch play maker, stick handler, and scorer, Rowe again led the Green and Gold in scoring with 31 goals and 32 assists for 63 points. He was named a first-team all-star for the second straight year in the Tri-State league and also earned co-MVP honors in the conference.
