The Ed Sayer Memorial Award, an honor that recognizes an individual that exemplifies the former Clarkson swimmer’s spirit in exhibiting compassion for their teammates, an indelible work ethic, a passion for their sport, and an appreciation of the intricacies and importance of teamwork, went to senior men’s basketball player Rey Jefferson (Budd Lake, NJ). A three-year member of the Clarkson University Men’s Basketball team, Jefferson made an impressive impact. Aside from averaging over 12 points per game and being nominated for the Best Defensive Player of the Year in the Liberty League this past season, Jefferson was active in the Clarkson and Potsdam communities. He worked in numerous roles for the athletic department, including laundry, website videos, announcing soccer games, and as line judge at volleyball. Additionally, he was a two-year member of S.A.A.C., helped organize the D’Amuge Fund/West Africa night at basketball games, helped organize Hoops for Home Fundraiser, and coordinated the basketball team’s participation in the Sponsor a Soldier Drive. Finally, he also was a key part at Special Olympics Awareness Day, and numerous other S.A.A.C. activities.

For the second straight year, David Kinney (Mexico, NY) was chosen as the Male Athlete of the Year. Kinney has been an invaluable member of the Golden Knights’ baseball team in its rise to first-place in the Liberty League, leading the conference in slugging percentage, extra-base hits, doubles, and saves, while batting .375 with an earned run average just over 1.00. From the Clarkson Volleyball team, Sara Artus (St. Regis Falls, NY) was chosen as the Female Athlete of the Year. Named an AVCA All-American for the second straight year, Artus led the conference with 560 kills, leading all other athletes in the Liberty League by more than 20 percent in that category. Her 4.21 kills per set ranked in the top 20 in the country for the second straight season, and Artus helped lead the Golden Knights to their second consecutive NCAA appearance, moving on to the round of 32 with a four-set victory over Hunter College.

Winning the Male and Female Rookie of the Year Awards were Nate Uline (Gansevoort, NY) of the men’s basketball team and Jamie-Lee Rattray (Kanata, ONT) of the women’s hockey team. Along with being chosen to the Liberty League All-Rookie team, Uline led the conference in field goal percentage, finished fifth in blocked shots and ranked in the top 10 in rebounding. He steadily gained playing time throughout the season and finished the year averaging 8.2 points per game, the highest figure by a freshman at Clarkson since the 2003-04 season. Rattray ranked 14th in the country in scoring among all first-year players and was Clarkson’s leading scorer with 25 points on 7 goals and a team-best 18 assists. She ranked second on the team in goals scored during ECAC Hockey games, including a pair of game-winners.

The Male and Female Scholar Athlete of the Year Awards went to Shane Farrell (Webster, NY), a junior from the Clarkson Men’s Lacrosse team, and Kathleen Lewicki (Olean, NY), a junior on the Clarkson Cross Country team. Both student-athletes have posted a 4.00 cumulative grade-point average through five semesters. The Team GPA Award went to the Clarkson Nordic Ski team, which has a cumulative grade-point average of 3.58.

The Individual Student-Athlete Advisory Committee award, an award that recognizes the accomplishments of a Clarkson S.A.A.C. member for community involvement and sportsmanship, went to Scott Desmond (Enfield, CT) for the second time in three years. The Team S.A.A.C. award went to the Clarkson Women’s Lacrosse team for the second straight year. Student worker Kimron Wilson was awarded the first John Bradshaw Memorial Award, a new award presented to a student that has left his/her mark with behind the scenes work that has been benefited the Clarkson Athletic Department.
